New IP and injectors still wont start

Lol exactly. I thought I was kinda dumb in real life, but then Al Gore invented the internet and gave me the opportunity to outdo myself.

I missed that part of his post till after I'd yammered so much, so uselessly.

New IP and injectors still wont start

Now I've stewed another minute or two, I've a question for the more seasoned members viewing this thread: Is it possible the original poster has the timing gear off by a single tooth? Would the engine fire with ether and continue to idle under such circumstances? I'm just spit-balling and I...

New IP and injectors still wont start

Ok, now I think we may be getting somewhere. If indeed your pump is timed 180° out, it's not a problem intrinsic to the pump itself, you just need to reinstall it with the sprocket rotated 180° from its current position. It's been quite a long while since I performed the job and so I shall...

New IP and injectors still wont start

If your pump were 180 out you'd notice a distinct lack of power, more smoke while running and a much louder "clack clack" engine sound. I'm baffled. You've got fuel delivery happening, as indicated by the white smoke while cranking, maybe the injectors aren't properly atomizing the fuel...

7.3 idi no start/bad noises after reinstalling injector pump

That's real weird. Hard to imagine a sizeable enough chunk of carbon to pinch between the piston crown and the head falling through the hole in the precup. It's running well now?

Shut off fuel for a compression test

There's a fuel cut off solenoid that is the kill switch for the engine. It requires 12 volts to hold it open allowing fuel to flow. You'll notice, looking at your injection pump there are a couple electrical connections. The one closest to the firewall is the shutoff solenoid. The plastic...

    Fuel Injectors or IP?

I've got a tank with a broken fuel gauge and I've also noticed what feels like a short, intermittent power boost just before it goes completely empty. I figured same as you, air intrusion messing with the timing.

New IP and injectors still wont start

Is your starter getting tired? Needing 80° weather before it'll fire unassisted is uncharacteristic, in my experience. Do you know what your compression numbers are? Pretty sure mine would fire down to 20° without any glow plug cycle. That's just a guess, it's been a while since I was running...

New IP and injectors still wont start

I won't even consider purchasing a truck on which the previous owner has been using ether. I know it can be used without necessarily damaging anything but, if a reasonable amount of compression is there, using ether is just avoiding addressing whatever issue or issues are actually causing the...

New IP and injectors still wont start

Is your timing 180 degrees out? It's easy to do and would cause the exact symptoms you're describing. You say it starts with ether? Is it running shitty, with very low power? Also, I see comments suggesting these engines won't fire without glow plugs. Nonsense. A block heater and cranking the...

    1993 7.3 IDI Factory Turbo

If it's really only got 32k miles, I wouldn't mess with opening it up at all, unless you want to install head studs or something. Main seals, water pump, valve cover seals Fuel return lines while the engine is out, cause they're cheap and easy. New fuel lift pump? Oil cooler seals? Anything...

    New project '87 6.9 f250

Please, for the love of all that's holy, DON'T USE ETHER. There's no advantage to doing so and tons of risk. The fuel system can be primed with the starter.

    Glow Plug Controller Broke Off!

When I did the passenger side valve Cover gasket and my fuel return lines, my knees felt like solid bruises afterward. And, I managed to massage a leak into the top radiator cap. Eeediot.

    7.3 IDI engine heating options

A method that really helps, but is a pretty big pain in the ass: drain your engine oil and place it into a giant stock pot (probably take a couple of them for the whole volume). Wake up about 30/45 mins early for work, warm the oil on your kitchen stovetop. A thermometer would be useful to bring...

White/Blue Smoke with oily fuel in exhaust pipe

Lots of white/blue smoke, all the time it's running? Enough thin, oily fuel type liquid in the tail pipe to soak a rag? Crank case oil seem thin? No? Sounds like the original poster is speaking of more than soot.

White/Blue Smoke with oily fuel in exhaust pipe

Mechanical lift pump failure is contaminating engine oil with diesel fuel. Thinned oil is getting into the combustion cylinders, it isn't atomized and so isn't burning, and the excess is getting tossed around and working its way out the exhaust valves and ultimately the tail pipe. Just a guess...

Hundreds of gallons Free waste vegetable oil in north Idaho.

What it says in the title. Collected loads of the stuff. Not interested enough to mess with it anymore. Anyone interested in picking it up can have as much as they can haul. Probably around 750 gallons total. Lemme know.

Awesome. That's what I was looking at, an eBay seller. Thanks for the info, Sir.

    Champion Radiators for the IDI

Did you order directly from Champion? I need a new radiator. During the replacement of my passenger side valve cover gasket, I recklessly put my weight on the rad as I contorted to scrape the original, petrified gasket away. I now have a leaky radiator.
