Yeah, kind of concerning. Any ideas?

(Already pulled rockers, checked pushrods).

My money is on dirty lifters. How clean was it when you opened it up rob? Have you done any oil changes since tossing it in? I would try a heavy dose of mmo or seafoam for 150 miles then do an immediate oil change

I got it with no oil in it, put in some decent but used(2500 mile) oil when I changed the oil in one of my trucks, for the video of it firing up.
When I installed it, I drained all that oil and put new 15w40 oil and a new filter in it.

It actually didn't look bad when I pulled the covers for new gaskets, that was before installation. No deposits; some of the valve springs looked a different grayer color than others, but that might be either a couple having been replaced with newer ones, or heat from slight leaking past the valve seals.
I did see actual valve seals in there, so it couldn't have gotten too hot.
I've seen them look a /lot/ worse, especially once the guides start leaking...

Looked similar after the new oil when I pulled the covers again. The oil actually doesn't look pitch-black yet(only been 50 miles or so), so I'm guessing no major deposits in there.
I'm guessing MMO would be the best? I don't have anything handy I don't think, so what's the preferred product for this sort of cleaning?

I’ve had the best luck with mmo. I had the same issue with our dt466 and after two aggressive oil change cycles with mmo it’s quiet at idle again. My 93 will actually start to tick to remind me it’s passed it’s oil change interval again.

MMO is good stuff. Run that stuff in every engine I own. Both gas & oil.
Just might do the trick for ya.

i was going to check the timing.

Mine sounds like that until it gets warm. Maybe not quite that loud but it's there. I ran it for the first time since October last weekend and it was really loud but started to calm down after an hour of idling. Figure she's just pissed about sitting so long. I did change the oil before I ran it.

I would try the MMO and change it a couple times after you run it a while and really get it hot.

Ok, so... put 1 qt or so of MMO into the engine on what, Tuesday? morning. Drove it to work. Fired it up a couple times during the day. Went home.
Wednesday, I picked up more MMO and added another quart, on Wednesday night.

I've noticed that it might be a little quieter, especially under load. At hot idle, though, that's when it's worst... Still pretty bad.

Today, i'm going to do my monthly Costco run, 50 miles away. The speed limit is 70 most of the way there(vs 60 around here), so I'll get some high-speed miles on her.

Still not sure why it's doing it and what it'll take to fix it.

Kink the cDr hose it pressurizes the crankcase more and gives the pistons back pressure. If it's piston slop it will quite down because they won't be rattling on the way down. Ask me how I know that...it's hard to diagnose sounds from a video but my firsther idi sounded similar and would crank right up and ran like a champion but it had noise I couldn't figure out....until I tore the heads off and saw that there was .01 wear in each cylinder. Any blow by? Compression check?
