So the last of the big project that are almost currently completed was replacing the fuel tank. If you look close at the square tank in the last pic of the first post, it was crunched when I bought it. Winters salt most likely wasn't kind and it started a slow drip most likely due to crevice rust.

Found an MRAP tank in VA for a good price and its a bit bigger than what I had. So just needed to mount it. Time to break out the metal saw and TIG.

Here is the brackets and tank to give an idea while I was thinking things up:

Since the mog frame is designed to twist, I wanted to make sure the tank mounts would give, so I went with a 'big rig' style strap mount.

Mike made the pins for me from stock. Off the shelf pins were stupid expensive.

Completed strap holder with strap on tank...

Just needed the bits to weld on that bolts to the truck now...

Mike then shot two coats of SPI primer on the tank and mounts. He did an amazing paint job! Nothing left to do but bolt it to the truck. Painful cause it looks so nice compared to the rest of the truck!

And as I am sure he will point out, I did put a few scratches in it. Cussing and crying ensued. Hopefully it will buff out!

Put the stock plumbing back to get on the road. Got a shopping list for AN fittings and -6 startlite hose.

Peeled the protective film from the stainless straps for some bling...

Yes I gave him a bunch crap over scratching the tank.

I stripped the red oxide primer off of it with 180 grit on the DA.

Threaded pipe into the drains to holes to hang it.

Three coats of SPI epoxy fully flashed.

Looks pretty darn good for primer huh? Even shot it with the dreaded purple gun.

This stuff will make a painter out of you. Just don’t shoot it too heavy.

Rob:
Thanks for the vid! Had not seen that one. The SEE mog was near the very last 406s made and built like tanks to do combat engineering. They carry a lot of extra mass. I would bet had they had an AG tire (rather than a .mil tire), they would have made it up that muddy hill. Mogs off road are really tire limited.

Those guys had more balls (or stupid) than me. Until I got a nice big winch and could self extract, not sure I would go a park like that alone. The mog is so good, I would be afraid of getting SO stuck, I'd never be found.

Saw it from a distance on Monday afternoon while doing a part swap. Hell of a time keeping my son in the car and not letting him (or me) run over and look at it close. (We were headed to Christmas dinner)

Oh, welcome!

Guys in the video were dumb not using hearing PPE.

Santa brought me aviation headsets and the junction box to be able to protect what hearing I got and still talk.

One big improvement they could of done to help it would of been to air down those tires. The SEE truck even without the implements is still a heavy truck with super stiff springs and suspension.

Remember they are tractors and not meant to break any speed records. Just drive slow and enjoy the ride and what you'd miss if you were driving fast.

Oh and congrats on your Unimog purchase!

The next installment of as the mog turns— tail lights are a good thing.

So, what started out to be a quick rewire of the tail lights turned into a lot more when we found this.

That was about halfway up the chassis and I found it when the arc happened. New plan. New rear harness.

Started in the rear. Everything to weatherpacked.

The old attachment point in the rear was a terminal block exposed. So I went this route.

I used one of these on my trailer and it worked awesome. Plenty of room to grow for trailer wiring when we get there.

Fits nicely in the rear frame rail about where the terminal board was.

Then some wire loom and clamps later-

Okay. That’s better now.

Let’s put together a new harness.

Get it all together and pull it through.

Need to re-connectorize a couple things. This harness has the fuel level sender and the low air pressure warning switch in it. Here is the pig tail for the pressure switch.

I also had to pull the wire for the starter solenoid as it runs in that harness too. So it got a weather pack as well.

Alright. Pull the fuel sender wires over along with the pressure switch wires.

Mike, I was starting to wonder what you would do with all of the "free" time you would have now that Big Red is running well and put away for the winter. Now I know! Thanks for continuing to help your friend and for posting up the progress!

Now, let’s see if we’ve got it all working.

You must be registered for see images attach

Damn. Almost. No license plate light. Hmm.

We ended up hitting the parts store and grabbing a new light fixture that holds a 194 bulb. Turns out the 24v bulb version will fit and it works dandy. It turns out we got an identical fixture so it went right back on in place of the old one.

So up under the hood, we had to desolder the fancy pins and re-solder and install it. Here’s what it looks like unplugged.

And plugged in.

That was a major pia but it all works now.
