Not sure on the 1990s trucks but on my truck I can adjust the pressure setting on the compressor clutch cycling switch (flat head screw between the two electrical pins). In this way, you can adjust the low side suction pressure to a large degree. By raising it you can in theory reduce the pressure difference between low side and high side and... (to what degree I'm not sure) also reduce the temperature differential.

might be able to wire in one of these under your dash. this is what all my aftermarket systems use on my school buses. has a reostat to adjust the temp at which it cycles off at. can either mount the capillary tube in the duct or under your dash. wired inline with the compressor power. there are many different styles and temp ranges for them.

I've used these on a few different applications and they work great. They have a NC and NO contact, so they can be used for either a heater or cooler.
