3inch Stacks?

I had 5" on my 84, my 87 and my 85 in my sig and they sounded great. I had a 6" piece of square tubing laid in the bed and my stacks welded to that. It was the deepest sounding thing on the road... Everybody commented on it.

Is 3" really a restriction when you probably have 3" and a tight bend right out of the turbo? Anything more seems silly, especially taking up bed space.

No way, should be piped up through the floor of the cab. Real nice sound and won't bother anyone else.

Not a fan to stacks at all. I'd leave it 4" under the truck.

Stacks look good on semi trucks. Not sure about our trucks. Have yet to see an Idi equipped with that kind of setup. I know a lot of the dodge guys put stacks on along with their 6ft side mirrors. Heck, I have even seen a duramax with a 55 gallon oil barrel as a stack in the back of the bed. Not my cup of tea to say the least.
You will soon find that people like to stuff exhaust stacks with garbage.....so be prepared for that when you go into town.

A single stack can make sense. Primarily if you wheel in deep water. I had a problem once with side pipes on a stepside. Went up a hill climb that got a little too skinny and couldn't make it. Kinked one side completely shut on the way down and killed the engine, had to cut it off with a hack saw to carry on. Aside from that, I suppose it makes sense to keep soot off whatever your towing, and for that reason I've considered a single 3" stack but my exhaust isn't real dirty, not enough that my boat gets dirty on my usually under 1 hour tow. A stack might just put any mess from a long tow in my boat instead of on the hull though, and I prefer not to infringe on bed space.

A stack will make a mess. Luckily my truck is dark when I had mine. After a rain you'll get black chit everywhere. You could avoid it with flappers.

People always act like this is some kind of fashion statement, and to a lot of dumb teenagers, I guess it is. I want stacks on my truck for one simple reason: It smokes like an old crack *****. I'll bet mine isn't the only IDI that does this. Sticking that smoke in the air keeps it away from your truck, anything you might be pulling, and the person behind you. That is the reason big trucks have stacks, it is not because they look cool.

Additionally it opens up a lot of under bed space for things like tanks, batteries, toolboxes, whatever.

like a smoking IDI is reason enough for stacks, that's funny bs. Let's be honest here, stacks on pick ups are definitely in the 90 percentile range a FAD. Theres very few people I've seen that put them on to try to direct exhaust away from a load. Not trying to rally against them here but to say they're not a "fashion statement" is silly. Just like in front of the tire dumps. Ain't really my thing but if your gonna do it might as well do it right is how I feel about it. That said, to me 5" looks more porportionate then the 3". 3" doesn't even look quite right ran out the back imo.

Waystro, I don't ship, I don't like pay pal. I prefer to deal face to face locally hence why I said it does you no good. I've only held on to it this long cause I had planned to cut the end off for a turn down exhaust tip. I've already given away a stack locally.

I'm only looking at doing a Single stack not because it's a Fad but because I tow a Trailer a lot and most people don't want soot covered Firewood.

I guess you must only use your truck to get groceries. When my truck cold starts the entire thing is enveloped in a cloud of smoke. That's on #2 diesel, I plan on running WMO soon, which is also very common with this particular engine. Even if it didn't smoke it keeps the smell up in the air farther from the ground.

Additionally my truck smokes in traffic, and I have no intention of fixing it. It's rude to point that at the person behind me.

Funny you say that. That's what I did on my "nice" truck, so I can launch my boats without it dunking the exhaust.


My point is it really doesn't matter why somebody wants stacks, there are many, many useful reasons. It is a waste of bed space on a modern truck that runs clean. On an old smokey flatbed however...
