squiking noise

Since April i am happy owner of 1993 cargo van E350 IDI 7.3 no turbo.It felt in my hands for $1000. It needed new glow plugs ,heater blower motor and few minor thinks. I fixed all that and felt in love with it,originally i was gone flip it.
I love how it rattles and stinks.It came from Tennessee so there is not much rust on it. From day one i had squiking noise in the front of engine like belt slipping,have serpentine belt,so took the belt off and checked tentioners,they are good.The noise comes and goes so i figured maybe vacum pump is going bad.Since i put 6000 miles on it ,245k now.Start good runs nice and i get 20 MPG and dont burn any oil , well 1/2 quart in 5000 miles. Few days ago i took oil filler cap off with the engine idling , there is no smoke coming out so no blowby but there is noise coming out from the oil filler tube like metal to metal like bad bearing.When i put the cap back on cant hear anything just like normal idling diesel.Now i wonder if this is timing gear going bad and what it takes to fix this problem.I know many guys on here know most answers to IDI so i hope to get some answers and pointers. Thanks in advance.

I don't think the timing gears can really go bad. Could just be a normal noise.
Did you check the idler pulleys?
Also the vacuum pump is a likely suspect.

It's not the timing gears, as said, there is nothing to go bad.

Have you considered that it might just be the belt? I had some old napa belts on that I thought were in decent shape but i kept having slipping noises and flapping noises on occasion, switched them out for some newer ones recently and all the noise went away.

Jasper thank for quick responce. I can hear the noise coming out of the filler tube ,when i put the cap back on i cant hear it.Sometimes the noise is loud so i hear it when driving so maybe i have two problems ,the vacuum pump making loud noise and something inside. I went to a diesel mechanic i know and hi said this noise is bad get rid of this think,its old and is not Powerstroke. Well no i dont go for that.

yARI008 thanks for your comment.You maybe right about the belt making loud squiking noise that comes and goes ,or vacuum pump.However steady grinding noise coming out of filler tube that sounds like bad bearing, that is what i worry about.

You are just hearing the timing gear, and it sounds perfectly normal to me. That's what the inside of a diesel engine sounds like, lol.

If you're still truly worried, send an oil sample in the black stone and it will tell you if you have any bearing issues.

Show us some more of your van, what do you have going on with that air intake??

The squeaking in the background, yes, you might be right. I was referring to the sound coming out of the oil fill tube in my previous comment.

Oh man you really think this is normal.Hmm so my diesel mechanic is full of it, he loves Powerstrokes as hi makes very good living by working on them.I own 10 Ford cargo vans with gas engines 5.4 and work on them often,we do expediting.This is my first diesel just for my personal use,so all the sounds and noises are new to me.This whole scare started last week on the trip to Oshkosh Wisconsin from Detroit 1000 miles round trip.On the way back going 65-70 MPA i noticed bluish smoke coming out tail pipe when i lifted my foot of the gas pedal and go away when pushed the pedal down just a bit,it does not do it at slower speeds.Next day my mechanic told me the smoke is maybe from leaking injector and the noise from oil filler tube is a big problem.Oh well i just keep going.That intake is my invention serves two purposes, cold air from under the fender ,second is intake noise reduction.Man this intake noise was so loud when i pushed the pedal down.Now i can hear the tires rolling down the hwy. I will take some pcs of my love tomorrow.

Oil fill noise sounds normal inyermittent squeek...tensioner or alt or vacuum pump...

Blue smoke sounds like brning oil...could be sputtering low pop off injector...

Negative, mine has always made that noise. Like I said, if you're still worried send a sample in, will tell you everything you need to know.

Thank you guys for your help. I'll get new pulleys when i get a minute, they are $15 a piece at Auto Zone.The noise from oil fill sounds like i have none to worry about.You guys are great.I cant blame my mechanic for bad advice maybe he is not to familiar with IDIs , i only have seen two other IDIs in his shop in last few years.Powerstrokes ,hi has tons of them all over the place. I took few pcs. of my van showing the grill and headlights from 2006, van seats are also from 2006 van, door panels from 2006 van.Just upgrading.The blue smoke.I drove around town today, no smoke.It does not burn oil so maybe one of the injectors its going.
