I have a question! If its to much for this truck to handle, then what did they use to pull 40' trailers back in this trucks day? I know not everyone used a semi to pull a 40' flatbed 2 axle.

F-450's? 650's?

Tim.

So my truck weighing in at 7500lbs and having 4:10's and a ZF is rated to tow a whopping 6500lbs!!! I had no idea my truck was so heavy duty:rolleyes:

I'm not hatin', its a very grey area. I'd lookfor 94 turbo ratings and base that for any turbo truck. I have searched myself and the best I could fins is a 351W equipped truck with 4:10 gears was rated to tow 12,500lbs. That doesn't sound too far off. I do remember that the ratings were taken off of the trucks weight so a 2wd truck would have a higher rating than 4wd, ext cab a higher rating than a crew cab and so on. This leads me to wonder if the 351 truck gas higher ratings due to its lighter weight.

I would be comfortable bumper pulling 12,000lbs and 5th wheeling 14,500lbs. Not sure of the legalities of this either, I just know what I have pulled. Also keep in mind, I'm in relatively flat South Jersey. Mountains and high elevations will change the way you look at everything.

the truck in the pic is a commercial chassis dualie with a pickup dualie flatbed mounted on it's back. you can good for a gross combined of 26k. a 14-6k GN trailer will give the truck a workout. if the combo was mime, i'd make sure the motor is good and put a ZF5 behind it.'86 the pickup flatbed and find a alu commercial chassis flatbed so it can take up space and give you mounting points to hang alu storage boxes and a extra fuel tank such as a side tank off a box truck like a Isuzu NPR. I'd also look into putting in a E450 rear out of a 99-2004 van dualie with 4.62 or 5.13 gears. why? intergrated disc brakes with parking brake and the std. 8x6.5 bolt pattern. obviously a hydroboost system is required. lastly, the DOT wiring needs to be run from a breakered junction box with a Tekonsha Voyager elec brake. tubo'd w/IC or natural is your choice.
that's what I would build if I wanted to get into the hauling business with a triple car trailer. good luck!

Well obviously yeah =) but if i wasn't trying to stay low low buck to keep my overheads down, transport is very competitive. Theres no guarantee i can turn enough profit fast enough to pay for everything that "should" be done, gotta take it one step at a time my friend. Your advice as always has been great as ive been reading alot of your other posts, but i just can't afford to do all that. I need to basicly, get this truck running in a bone stock fashion, work it till it dies. I don't have much other choice, if i had more $$ i would have definetly bought a bigger/stronger truck to begin with =) I'm not getting ANY bank funding for this, and i already pay all the fun bills of owning a house and cars, and a wife that barely works. Its all coming out of my personal paychecks, so i gotta go 1 step at a time unfortunetly, if i can get this truck to go 6 months without blowing up, im set and will be looking for a newer bigger rig, might even step myself up into a codiac or class 8. Lets face it, no big money to be made doing 2-3 car hauls =) thanks again towcat, always appreciated

I know money is tight but the E450 rear is a very worthwile search. That will give you gears, brakes AND allow you to float under Cali's smog nazis as the medium duty diesel truck segment is being phased out. By 2023, all medium duty trucks will have to be at least a 2010 or newer. Starting this very next year, anything older than 1995 will be taken off the road by your state govt.

do bear in mind the suggested build is one to bring your truck up to a f450 spec chassis without triggering the 14k GVW rule. that's the one Goose is talking about. all my equipment is bought and rebuilt by me. there was no big money backing me either. what's been suggested covers two areas. one: stopping. stock f350 with drums in the back sucks. adding hydro helps greatly. adding 4 wheel disc puts you into f450 capability. once you've driven a f450 loaded to 15k gross and had to panic stop, will you appreciate the stopping power. two: weight savings. every pound saved translates into more weight for cargo. you're going to need to have a place to store tie-down stuff, have more fuel and keep the duals from throwing spray at other cars, why not build something that can accomodate all three goals? if your goal is to get into a bigger truck, then don't start small. but do keep in mind, you will find it's easier to fill a smaller trailer than it is to fill a 10 pack or a 13 pack hauler. I have a friend who sold off all five of his rigs last year when his last kid finished college. in his words..."I'm done with that stress now that I don't owe a damn thing". He kept his f350 built like my suggestion but with a turbo motor and a exh brake added. He's still pulling a wedge and not having to deal with the stress in finding enough cars to make a fully loaded rig worth running.
