the large fitting looks the same too.minus the fact that the 7th gen fitting appears to have a larger outer hex head where you tighten/loosen it with a wrench(same size,but just deeper.) if the fluid holes are a different size in that,then the eye can't tell the difference anyway.i didn't measure them,just eyeballed.
i can try swapping the fitting over.it does have both o-rings and looks just the same.if the threads for the brake booster line are the same,i'll try it.

one thing i noticed,though i dunno if it helps;
the large fitting and spring look/feel the same (where it counts) but the valves look slightly different.
the fluid holes look the same size,but 7th gen holes looked to be higher (or lower.can't recall now which way) than the 9th gens.not sure why,nor what it means,but the placements of these two holes are for sure slightly higher/lower.

i don't think firmness can be controlled in the steering box.i have a reman red head box and iirc it's the same part they would send to any 7th gen owner as well.not saying they don't firm steering up like a 9th gen steering or not,but iv never read where a 7th gen truck owner swapping in a read head and got firmer steering.

your 100% sure about the 7th gen diesel trucks having the pinky steering like the gas trucks?
it's not like 9th gen steering is so overly firm or anything,but hot dang,i sure miss that 7th gen pinky steering is all.i hope we can figure it out.
you don't think it's just in the 7th gen pump? just somehow puts out more pressure? smaller/larger pulley? something? the pressure is all controlled with these 3 parts? that fitting,and the valve and spring behind it,regardless of the pump type?

Don't waste your time, the lines you have will not bolt up to the slantnose fitting - it calls for a externally o-ringed hose end, whereas what you got is internally o-ringed between the hose and the line nut, and then there is a teflon seal between said line nut and the pump fitting.

Honestly idk about that, I never even saw the parts you got - just called in a favor for their pulling at the junkyard and shipping them to you. They are correct for the application tho, they came from the same truck that I received some slantnose parts from as well.

Steering boxes do matter. For example it is common to pull the box off a newer cop car and drop it in an older fullsize passenger car, that alone without touching the pump nets stiffer steering and gets rid of the pinky steering the '80s landyachts are known for. Pretty sure trucks use the same design boxes, so the same differences could apply to trucks as well...

The ones I ever drove (two trucks and one van) most definitely had pinky steering. All 6.9 powered.

Unless there is another valve further inside the pump, of which I'm unsure. Guess I can always split a junker pump and see what I find inside it, but that won't happen right away. If you get a smaller pulley that will spin the pump faster and make it produce higher pressure and flow at lower engine speed. All serpentine C2 pulleys I've seen have been the same size tho, if there is a factory application that runs a smaller one I am not aware of it.

Has anyone considered the steering gears may be different and are possibly the cause of the increased steering effort.
