So I bought an 89 250 xtra cab 4 wheel drive last week, with an older hypermax turbo. I thought I would run it down to the muffler shop this morning to have it straight piped, only to find that it already is!
Why would a truck with no muffler be so damn Quiet? My 86 with the old banks turbo is louder than hell straight piped. Is this something particular to the hypermax design?

I bummed, this truck is too quiet for me!

Your timing is in need of advancing. These idi engines run very quite when they are retarded on the timing. Advance it the "thickness" of a dime. See what that does.

take a pic of the exhaust to let us see how it travels, might be able to point out something that is quieting it down, how high are you revving to say it isnt loud enough? I have heard multiple banks turboed trucks and they were way quiet with 3 inch straight pipes until about 1500 or 2k rpms

The old banks kit on my other truck is hella loud straight piped but this old hypermax on the new truck straight piped, is darn near silent.

The turbo works fine and I can hear it spool up, although it doesnt give a ton of boost, I have the fuel turned down right now for emissions testing.

I don't know how to post pics on here. My banks is the old original on my 86 and was installed in 88. That thing sounds great, even when it starts up, sounds very similar to a first gen straight piped dodge in comparision for sound.

The new truck exhaust runs straight to the back, over the axle and out the side.

Would installing 4" exhaust help with the sound any?
