I just bought a 89 s1600 with a 7.3 and am happy to have found this site. It's a 8ft dump and from what I can tell very well maintained. 5spd trans shifts like butter and the truck drives great. I have always been a Cummins guy and had a 99 3500 2wd that was bombed pretty good (old tdr lingo). Anyhow, what should I look out for on this truck, and are there any problems that are common? And of course, what are some mods that any of you would perform right out of the gate with a 89 7.3. I have heard of some high egr temps so my first question is: does it matter which side to put the egr sensor on a idi 7.3? We only had one side to choose on the Cummins and it was just a matter of pre or post turbo which I don't have to worry about with this one. Thanks for any replies and love the site!

welcome aboard.

what you are calling the egr sensor is actually an egt(exhaust gas temp) sensor. most put them on the driver's side exhaust manifold near number 8 cylinder if i remember correctly. you don't want to exceed 1200*F EGT for an extended period of time.

you will want to test the coolant for the proper SCA levels. test strips can be found at NAPA. this is to make sure your engine is not at risk of cavitation.

Welcome to OBN! There are a few stickies right on top of this forum that will help you. First mod would be adding the EGT gauge, then work from there, adding air then fuel. There are plenty of Tech articles also at the top of the forum. But if you get experimental, just ask in a new thread, there are many hours of IDI experience on the board, and not much that somebody hasn't done.

Thanks for the replies. Ok egt(few cocktails had me type egr) on the drivers side of #8. 1200 the max. I was telling a buddy mine that was around the max and he could not believe it! I was explaining how they could not take the heat. Now, I have heard a little about the cavitation, what's the story with this and how can I prevent it?

Some things to look out for, the fuel system (IP and injectors) are only good for about 100-125k miles. Some go farther, but that's about the average. So those may become an issue soon.

The fuel return caps don't seem to last very long, and are a very common source of air intrusion problems. Luckly they're very easy and quick to change out. (Type4 sells a top notch kit, for dirt cheap)

IP timing is a small issue with these trucks. They slowly retard as they age, and almost no shops will time them anymore. Icanfixall runs a timing meter rental program if you're not interested in getting ahold of one yourself. The Ferret pulse adaptor is a popular one around here. It's cheap, and works very well. Regardless of how you choose to do it, I would try and get it timed.

As far as mods go? If it doesn't already have one, a turbo of course. There is also the Torque Cam, also from Type4, that helps ALOT as well. Agnem also sells the "Moose Pump" which is a high quality turbo cal IP, and also upgraded injectors There's a sticky up with the Moose dyno numbers if your interested there.

Really these arn't bit power number engines. What they are is stone reliable, burn anything, doomsday machines that will simply take abuse that would kill most other engines. Then drive you back home.

Thanks again guys. Going to be changing that coolant and getting some SCA's in there right away. Great article

Welcome to the greatest idi forum on the net. How did you find us. We have a collective base of information that surpasses any for dealership on the planetplus... Our help is offered free. Try getting that from a dealership. We don't bash members or newbies either. This is a family orrineted site that complete famileis and trucks.. One of your founding members has 4 in the family and they have 6 idi rigs I think was the last count. Reading here can cause sleepless nites too. Best advice to you from me is to ask questions before doing any work. There is so much to offer here even down to the filter filter used by many here. Its the large Motorcraft 1995 powerstroke oil filter. It works and it fits. Best part of it is they filter down to a lower micron because the psd fuel injector system need cleaner oil.

Holy I don't know how but I missed the newbie..

Well sorry for that...Welcome to OB take a look in the tech section pick through what ya see. Most is geared to Ford PU but there is pertinent info that could be used in your med duty rig too..

Info on timing, cavitation, oil coolers, just about anything to do with these engines and trucks is in there!

Hope you enjoy the site and camaraderie here too...As for Gary and his thoughts on not bashing anyone...well we do a lil bit O hammerin once in a while in good fun!...you'll figure it out...what ever you do don't mention speedos....there's something amiss in this forum with those...;) LOL

Just checking in to see how you like the truck...I have a couple of these myself and couldn't be happier.
