water/air intercooler ?

Im thinking about running a water/air intercooler. The way i plan on setting this up i have the ability to plum it in line with my current air/air intercooler. I plan to do:

Out turbo
In water/air
Out water/air
In air/air
Out air/air
Into intake

I guess my ? is. Do you guys think i will be at a loss with the air/air being after the water/air. What im thinking is that the water/air is going to drop the temp lower than what the air/air can do and the air/air will just become a restriction rather than even more cooler. Or will the air/air be able to cool even further than from the water/air? Just something i have been pondering over. Thanks guys

Running em together will drop it lower than one alone. The cooler the temps the lower boost will be, but cold boost wins over superheated :sly
Nice thing about water/air ic's is you can toss ice in for even cooler temps ;Sweet:sly

So no matter how cold the water/air makes the air the air/air will be able to extract more heat from the air?

I also have been pondering about mounting the heat exchanger for the water/air. What i plan to do is mount it behind the passengers headlight. Then my bumper has a 4.5" hole in it with a tube that will go up through the core support and point right at the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger will have a shroud made all the way around it so the air from the bumper tube can only go through the fins of the heat exchanger. Also will have a fan behind it sucking air through it. I planned to cut a couple square strips in the plastic fender cover right behind the heat exchanger and put some expanded metal or something so the heat can escape. My fear is the heat exchanger wont work efficient enough under the hood. Any ideas on this.. Im kind talking out loud here. Wondering what peoples opinions are. Thanks

I think the biggest trick for a water to air unit, is to get the biggest heat exchanger you can. of course thats also dependent on how much room you have to fit one. Not sure how the bricknose is for clearance but I know the old slantnose doesnt give alot of room for doing much.

Water to air is more efficient correct?

If so, perhaps it should go air-air then water-air

I always thought it would be cool to rig up an AC heat exchanger to cool down the water. Basically a second setup. Like your AC core would be submersed to cook the water. But that would cause extra strain on the engine.

well thats kind of what i was worried about. The water/air bringing the top down lower than what the air/air can do and the air/air doing nothing but taking up space and or restricting air flow.

I was also thinking about mounting a large one under the bed on the passenger side but I'm kinda thinking it's gonna be a lot hotter under there on a toasty vegas day. As far as highway travel, the air may move fast enough under the truck that it may not grab so much of the heat that it might pickup in city traffic.

On another note, I think one would probably do just fine to be honest.

Was using AE on my BIL new 6.0. WOT, intake air temps were around 44-45*, while the other IAT were 75ish*. I assume the first is pre turbo, the second is after the intercooler. Ambient temps were in the 40-50's.

what sucks is if i mount this heat exchanger behind the headlight with the air tube and fan. this will allow me to keep the air/air. I cant stack anything more in front of the air/air there just isnt anymore room. But if i remove the air/air i will run a finned tube across in its place which will allow me to put the heat exchanger where the air/air was. Thats what sucks. I dont want to permanently mount anything until i know which is more efficient. But if i dont permanently mount things then i will never know how well it "could" of worked. BLAHH:mad:

What about an after cooler off of an industrial 5.9? I've for a cummins with an aftercooler and one with an intercooler and i think both could be made to work together. Look up my thread about the 5.9 and 8.3 cummins differences. There are the pics of my aftercooled 5.9 there.

I don't think so. The one I have runs coolant through the intake to suck heat off the boost.

I still think what everyone calls an Intercooler these days is an aftercooler and that an intercooled turbo is one that runs coolant through the turbo housing itself to cool it.:dunno

Charge air coolers are about weighing the loss of flow restriction vs. the gain of cooler charge temps.

I just can't find it, but there is a great youtube video of a Dodge Cummins with dual intake temp gauges before and after the charge air cooler. Sounds like it's running down the road putting out about 250 degree air or so and the after the charge cooler temp is just over 100, probably ambient. In any case the important part is that when you hear the truck and accelerate, you see the charge temps going up I think about the high 300s, and the after charge cooler temps only go up a few degrees.

So in short the second air cooler may not cool the temps more than a degree or two, and yet increase the air flow restriction near double. Neting in an ulitmate loss of power.

It has been awhile since I checked, but with my 6.0 cooler, air going into the motor was never much more than ambient temp. It seems like pulling the pass, sustained 10 psi for atleast 5 miles, the intercooler took off over 100 deg.
