So the wifes dad is in the hospital 39 years old having alot of heart problems. Doctors west is a great hospital but the drive is a little far so after we went to see him and driving back something did not seem right. Driving along rte 23 she decides " hey I want a DQ Blizzard "

well great I was wanting some ice cream and its been really icy here in Ohio and apparently in South Bloomsfield they decided against a salt truck coming by. So DQ qas 3/4 inch ice on the parking lot and drive though so my feeling came back we order and about three car lengths you hang a left to go to the window.make the turn a car is there in the window sit for a minute and gas it up truck slides backwards on a hill great I am stuck!!

The wife is laughing and now the whole staff is laughing and I am like ok can't steer it backwards will just go back straight try to go back a little for more grip none... i went almost into a pole about 3 feet and a new bumper I would get.So after I made the staff bring some salt out and a fellow guy comes by and pushes me out i slip and slide all the way out of DQ.

The whole moral to this story if you know theres no salt in a parking lot dont go in to it or if you do park in the middle of the parking lot

4x4 would have made all the difference in the world at that point, and anyone saying it ain't so doesn't have 4x4. 4x4 doesn't mean you're invincible, but it makes a huge difference for a truck which has most of its weight (when unloaded) on the front axle. I've been stuck when I pull into a downhill parking spot on grass (can't go forward), pull it in 4 hi and I'm back in business (though I wouldn't have pulled in there without 4x4 capability).

I've had the adventure of trying to navigate snowy back country roads in a 2wd truck with no weight in the back, it was actually fairly funny how little traction I had. I would hate to see ice and any incline.

You have 2 other pulling tires to catch traction.. When it iced over last year when I was on leave , My Z71 wouldnt move on solid ice in 2wd, Put it in 4x4 adn it would go , just had to be gentle on it.

Agreed. If the patch of ice isn't as big as the foot print of all 4 tires its a no brainer. Even on 100% ice a truck in 4x4 is going to have an easier time than a 2wd counterpart.

snow??? in michigan??? WTH are you talking about. i am serious. we have had almost no snow around hear this year. nothing that has stayed for more than a day or two.

tihs past saturday never got higher than about 10 deg F and it snowed. we got a couple inches. last night we had pouring rain and a thunder storm. now the snow is all gone. i just want my truck back with it's 450 pounds of concrete in the back so i can drive when we get some flurries. this crown vic really sucks when the flakes fly. it is really squrily with the slightest bit of snow.

i am not doubting 4x4 in snow. i now it makes a big difference. i just don't see any way that when you are on a sheet of pure ice with nothing to get solid trcation on how 4x4 will move you. you guys say that when you are on ice in 2wd the tires just spin. What makes the front tires so much more grippy when in 4x4 than the rears when in 2x4.

my mom has a 4x4 duragno. i want an ice storm now to perform my own tests.

It saved my ass in Dec of last year from going in the ditch ....two lanes come up the hill and one goes down...a Semi was stuck in the middle of both the up hill lanes, cars where coming up behind and passing him on the Left and forcing the downhill traffic into the ditch.

I had just stopped at the top of the hill, locked the hubs and stuck the truck in 4x4. I started down the hill, no weight, bad tyres...and then see the stuck semi, I too had to go out towards the ditch and when I turned the wheels to steer, I didn't get much response, I did get response when I applied light throttle though, and it was diligent use of throttle and steering that kept me from sliding right into the ditch! That day I bought 4 new winter studded tyres!

was is a solid sheet of ice like a hockey rink or an ice/snow mix.


i am talking about hockey rink like ice, not a mix of snow and ice. the snow on the ice will give the tires something to bite into.

once again, my question from my last post. what makes the front tires hook uup better when in 4x4 than the rears in 2x4?
