Just went out and started my truck ( first time in about a week ) I know its kinda warm out, glow plugs stayed on for about 10 sec. hit the key and she spun over about 6 to 7 times before firing. Whats yours doing? I've read on this forum that even with the glowplugs working proberly they can still take a few spins before firing off, it's the way the heads are desinged and the way the glowplug seats in them. I know i have a air intrusion somewhere on mine ( Havent had the time to look ) But i think that that aint a bad starting time,,, how many spins before you fire off? I think sootman asked you the question if you have any smoke coming from the tailpipe,,, i think he is meaning when your cranking it over before it start's. Mine idle's rough for about a minute after starting then smooth's right out

Mine takes 6-8 cranks, stop ad hit the gp's again and mash the pedal to the floor and another 6-8 cranks.. And yes it puffs while cranking.

getting back to the gear red. starter, i'am not sure what brand are the best ( their was a good write-up on here about witch were the better brands, do the search on this forum for it ) i forgot what brand i bought, but what iwant to say is that even if you have a gear red. starter on your truck right now, would you know how old it might be and was it abused? When i say abused someone may have cranked and cranked on it without giving it a cool off period, little by little that wears em down,,, HEAT destroys. Did you check all your battery cable and loose connections?

If you replace the starter go with DB electrical. my truck always started in 35 degree temps with a bump of the key. I never never above 25 degrees had time to even count a second before it was started. below that temp it'd take maybe a second or two of cranking. I also never had to run a block heater after putting that starter on.

Cranking speed is a huge factor on a diesel at any temperature! i had my DB for a couple years and even ran it empty on fuel a few times. spins so fast it just primes right away! LOL

This sounds to me like cranking speed or a compression problem....

This the starter you have, looks just like whats sitting on my garage floor and on the truck?? Maybe i'll try swapping starter's with the one from the parts truck, could be in better shape. The one from the parts truck looks fairly new.

That means you are getting fuel just not making enough heat to ignite said fuel. Possibilities are low compression, poor gp system or low cranking speed.
Cranking speed should be a min. of 150-175 RPM, which means at least 2.5 rounds per second. It should be really hard to count the engine turning over.

Glow plug resistance is less than 1 ohm when measured with an ohm meter across the plug directly. Otherwise the controller will short cycle the plugs.
Voltage drop across the wire to the controller should be less than .5v. Voltage drop across the relay while activated should be less than .5v.

Compression should be 350psi per cylinder at least. 400 would be a better number with our high compression engines. (I think someone on here said their fresh engine had over 500 psi cranking)

Where can i get a compression tester for these engines?? Also i don't think i am cranking 2.5 trimes a secound, that seems realy fast. The cranking speed sems fine to me, but i am used to old gas engines that crank a bit slow, mabe it's just lac of ranking speed..

What is the fastest cranking starter for these, and where can i get one??

Ive got a DB Electrical mitsubishi style starter, gets the job done. They also have the nippendenso style. Make sure you have battery voltage at the starter. Check voltage drop across the cables to the starter and across the solenoid when cranking. (especially if you question their integrity at all) Should be less than .5v drop anywhere in system. Grounds at the block are also an easily overlooked thing as well.
Probably online best place to get to get a compression tester. Don't get one from harbor freight- rumor around here is they wont make it through half of the engine before folding.
