I had taken today off of work to take care of a few things (including trying to get an exclusion to be able to back my truck in at school, as the 15 dollar tickets are getting to be a pita. But it was mostly for a little GP test.
Last night i had replaced my bullet style glow plugs (all factory International) with AC delco 60g. I removed the controller and left the stock harness in place and built my own harness using 4 gauge from the solenoid to a splice point on the motor and 4 individual wires go to each GP on the passenger side and another 4 gauge going over to the drivers side which again splits to individual wires leading to the drivers side GP's. This way i can revert back to the stock GP and controller if i ever decide to.
These are 10.5v self limiting and even after being powered for 240 seconds on the bench they were still glowing with no swelling. So i bought a new set for my truck. the problem is they are slow glowing.
Last night, it was 78F. wouldn't start (1 try only) with no glow time. 5 seconds of glow and she lit off no problem. (she will start without glow plugs at that temp, it just needs a few revolutions). Drove it to my friend's food distribution warehouse and left it over night in 35F. 30 seconds of glow time gave me a no frills smooth start. ran it over to the freezer at -10F and left it for 4 more hours (when i parked it in the freezer the engine temp wasn't high enough to budge my gauge or come off high idle). This time i gave it 45 seconds of glow time and it tried but didn't start (1 try only). Another 35 seconds gave me a good clean start.
This was all done with good group 65 interstate 700cca batteries, good clean battery cables and the crankcase filled with Lubromoly 10w40 HD diesel oil. Fuel was 85% #2 and 15% watf.
My last set of glow plugs kicked the bucket due to a stuck glow plug solenoid. They had ~60K on them and looked great coming out. Very little carbon (considering the high % of wmo i run, it looks like the water/**** injection + slightly advance timing) does wonders to keep the motor clean), My benchmark was my old 91 IDI that would coke the glow plugs in about 20K. While they weren't terrible, they weren't nearly as clean as these are. I'll snap some pics of the old GP's that came out when i find my connection cable.
I figured this would help someone if they were considering stepping outside the norm of OE glow plugs. I was debating on going with the 6v 6.9 plugs but frankly i don't see any talk about these plugs.
btw all my bench testing was done with the old plugs out of my Suburban (which are 60g) and were all in good shape considering they saw 3 sets of heads and my Burb was modified for extended glow times. they all glowed fully and not just at the tip. I never had swelling with them in the Suburban. So while i can't promise you readers that they can't swell like a OE plug, i can say that they didn't to me.

You are crazy! Testing your glow plugs by parking in a freezer... in Florida!!
