Here in Nova Scotia, we hand semi annual safety inspections on passenger and light commercial vehicles. Larger vehicles are yearly basis.

The rules are getting stricter and scrrticer. Basically what they want to see getting a sticker are rust free "new" vehicles....the newer the better.

Today I took my truck down for inspection check....she's not looking good.

I had the following wrong....

One wheel seal just a little damp...CONDEMED!

They CLAIMED no reverse lights, but you have to have the shifter JUST right for them to work....COMDEMED!

One flex hose has surface cracks...barely cracked at all...CONDEMED!

I had a PINHOLE in the exhaust. (I put a spot of weld on it, just fine! Factory blemish in teh new pipe I bought I guess?) CONDEMED!!

The fuel tanks were dry as a bone last weekend...but apparently it has a damp spot on it...CONDEMED!!

The little cable for the self adjusters in the rear brakes keeps falling off when it feels like it....CONDEMED!

and finally...the box. I crawled up underneath and patched the one bac spot on the crossmembers for the box that I could see....no go. I was told the truck WILL NOT PASS wth the current box on it now...C-O-N-D-E-M-E-D!!!

One of them little corner marker light bulbs was out as well....and they condemed her for that!!!

I bought everything but a box...including the wrong socket to fit the 10.25" axle nut. Came to just under $150 for self adjuster kits for both sides, one wheel seal and the flex hose.

A box is 10 times that. $1500. I just plain and simple can not come up with $1500. It may be time to part ways with the old girl...

****** me off because I spent $200 on balljoints and steering gear, $950 on tires and another set of wheels, $300 on new bearings and seals for the front end, $150 for new brakes and an axle joint this spring, $100 to change the transmission filter and fluid and $18 to add the lucas to her. $70 to change the coolant and thermostat (I JUST did tonight), minus the SCA's which I STILL had to buy. Add in another $200 for the bodywork I ALREADY done to the cab which is now rust free.

So lets total this up. $1988....and it's still not up to specs...PLUS I DID ALL THW WORK MYSELF! The guy that checked it over said it was pretty tight, and the frame, cab and running gear seemed to be in great shape, but the box was done.

So if I bought the box and put it on...I would be out $3488 on a truck I only spent $1500 on less than 2 years ago....I just can't see me putting it back on the road.

Not to mention the torque converter is still not 100% right, although it's MUCH better!

Why? What possible reason can they have to justify this policy. It is asinine! I'd be on the phone with or in the office of every local/regional government offical who is accountable for this nonsence. Fight that crap tooth and nail my friend. They would NOT take my truck from me.

I thought about it...but by the time I spend $32 a pop and find someone that will....I might as well just buy a box. All the other stuff is fixed already except for the wheel seal.

****** me off that my truck which I know is mechanically sound won't pass, but I see "g's" and punks driving around is heaps and rust cans all the time with no issues...maybe I should wear my hat sideways and say "oh, SNAP" to everything people say to me..

I dont understand the bed rust thing. Unless it is falling or will fall off and there are no sharp edges there should be no issues. I am originally from New jersey are they were ****** when i came to rust and they were not that bad

Yeesh and people complain about California's "inspection" (really just a smog check) being too strict...

Is that $1500 for a bed from a junkyard truck, or is that the price for a "new" one? Could you do a home-built flatbed and put it on for the inspection, then put the original bed back on after she passes?

There's GOTTA be a way around it...

The $1500 price tag is for a known available bed on our local "craigslist" type site.

This is the going rate for a bed of this nature in my parts...a southern rust free bed anyways.

I thought about the flatbed ideal, but Vicki INSISTS that I put a proper bed on the truck. She ain't too fond of a flatbed and litterally just said word for word "I'd rather you get a proper box" lol.

I had a flatbed before and she HATED it.

I mean seriously, this law BS is getting pretty bad.

There are NO sharp edges, no rusted through holes anywheres and the bed is mounted FIRMLY to the truck. I even patched up the two rusted out areas with sheet metal and my MIG welder, specifically so they WOULDN'T pick on it....I guess me being a young feller they figgure I might as well spend the $$ on the truck rather than whatever it is a guy my age USUALLY spends his money on....

****** me off being about the ONLY resposible guy around in my age group...I get painted with the same brush as everyone else.

I am gonna try and bite the bullet...call in a few favors from the locals I helped out and see if I can't get it together for a box....damn

Remove the box get it inspected and put it back on, the rust on the bed shoouldn't matter if the bed aint on the truck.

Is it too expensive or difficult to get the hell out of that country?

I would like to see all our liberals, communists and envirowackos moved to Canada and the good common sense folks from there to come down here.

That way every group can have the laws and live style they like.

What do you guys think.

Burt.

It's nice to live in Florida...

But there are some really crappy vehicles on the road, although mine's not one of them!

It's funny how in Canada there are such strict inspections but some states in the US don't even require inspections or emissions.

Not all of Canada has such tight laws, it varies by Provence, just like it varies by state.
In my part of Ontario, you have to pass a reasonably strict safety when you register the vehicle, but, it's good for as long as you keep it registered and insured after that. No emissions testing, and $75 buys 2 years worth of plates too...

I don't remember Nova Scotia being that ridiculous, but, it was still yearly $14 safetys when I left, and if you knew the right guy $20 and a case of beer would magically make a sticker appear on your windshield..
Hell, I remember dad taking his truck to a guy once who jacked up the front end with a cheapie bottle jack, gave things a shake, and signed the safety... LOL
