That would involve at least running 8 glow plugs in the intake... the amount of space that would take is pretty ridiculous. If you are going to go for the intake approach, the toaster method (grid heater) is the most direct and can deliver the most heat in the smallest area IMO.

In the other thread I mentioned there was also talk of a fuel fired heater which is similar to those use in tractor but I do not like that idea.

yah, I read that, it sounded kinda sketchy to me. Arent there guys on here fabin up custom intakes for their IDI's. I thought I read somethin about that a while back, If so, maybe someone could post some pics.

The direct injection and the significantly higher injection pressure (thousands more psi) are a big reason the cummins and DT360 and DT466 start just fine in cold weather without any glowplugs/heat grid. The DT466 I just purchased has nothing to aid starting in cold weather.

Combustion occurs in the precup on our engines, not in the cylinder, it spreads to the cylinder once the fuel starts to burn. That's is another important reason the glowplug is located where it is.

IDI-Glow Plugs, 7.3 PSD-GP's and Intake Air Heater, 6.0-GP's, 6.4-GP's. As for the Cummins Air Intake Heater, there's two grids and each pulls around 90-95 amps a piece, 180-190 together.

7.3 Intake heater is screw in:

Cummins is a square:

Detroit 6.2/6.2 use just GP's

Some Duramax's use the 7.3 style heater, and some use a more Cummins syle depending on the model, all use GP's as well.

Ok the wheels are turning now has someone got a 12v cummins that they could get some very good measurements off of the grid heater for me. Or if anyone has an old grid heater that is no good I'd gladly pay shipping to get it to me. Got an idea that might make a grid heater work in an IDI. But one would have to do away with the soup bowl totally and use a turbo style air cleaner

I would say go more with a 7.3 style one because you could just modify the bottom of the air filter housing and run as many of them you want into the housing, or put it into the intake manifold itself right by the top.

7.3 PSD's ran a heater, search AIH delete mod on many forums. A lot of guys are pulling them off for more power, might be able to pick up a couple working ones for free, or next to free.

i saw the link to the delete kit. the heater is said to reduce airflow by 20%.... when i get an intercooler, i was thinking of screwing one of those into russ 6.0 intake hats. wired to come on with the glow plugs.

I would wire it to a seperate solenoid, as they draw a hell of a lot of current. We're doing starting aid stuff at school(WyoTech Light Duty Diesel) right now and have to do current draw and testing and stuff on them all and it's kinda interesting how they all work.

00 PSD Intake Heater Test

Got one of these from work today and tested it out. After 20 seconds, it was over 1000 degrees F". It was wired into the GP solinoid. Gonna try to rig it up on my 92 7.3 this weekend.

That looks like you could fit it into the CDR hole in the manifold. Hmmm.......

Power inverter and a toaster!

I often wondered how an intake heater off a 3116/3126 cat or something like that would do along with the GP's in our trucks....I may have to take a trip to the local rig grave yard.
