Wow, the BW 1356 is usually a tough unit, and ya can usually rebuild one fer under 100bucks.

The NP205 is the older gear drive unit that will bolt to your E4OD, but need to make a notch on the output housing to clear the shifter stuff. I don't remember if the lowrange isn't as good either.

Personally would go for another fresh 1356.

Does the E40D use the same transfer case as an 84 f250.In other words will one from a c-6 be the same as his?
OMB-
86 and older uses the 1345
87 and newer uses the 1356
Mods needed to adapt either. Will bolt up but the linkages and shifter are in a different location.

A 205 won't work behind an E4OD, the front output is too close to the centerline of the truck, and the driveshaft won't clear the transmission case....
A 1345 is swappable with a 1356, you can use the existing '56 shifter and linkage, but, the '45 tends to be fixed yoke output, where the 56 for the most part has a slip yoke output, requiring swapping the driveshaft...

My '86 has an NP 208 t'case. It has similar problems.

For an exploded view of the 1356, you might want to take a look here, BW1356

The site probably has others also.

Was it the 1345, or 1356 that had a history of something going wrong with the oil pump? They have an upgraded part to fix it, but I forget most of the details. The NP205 is popular with big time trail riders because it is cast iron, and not alluminum. The gears are also a big inticement. The 1345 or 1356 are excellent "run of the mill" transfer cases. I wouldn't bother with an NP-205 unless you were a serious off-roader.

The 1356 has the issues with the pump wearing it's locating tab and spinning, ceasing it's ability to do anything. The 1345 has almost the exact same setup, yet it doesn't have this problem, which is quite strange.
