It's the foam from the diesel running into the tank. When the bubbles go away, then you can put more fuel into your tank.

Yes, it shuts off on foam. And then I have to slowly put in the 5 gallons where I can watch the foam roll within fill tube. Most people don’t have enough patience to do the last 5 gallons. I know my wife gets annoyed at me
But that’s an additional 75-100 miles of driving which matters on roadtripsMy point was that many people modify the factory fill to get fuel in faster and deal with the foam. My TDI has a “ventecomy” performed to it for this very reason.

The beginning of this thread back in Feb 2012, the kid
6 Nebraska IDIs shows using that clear plastic hose.
That stuff gets hard from the fuel, and will eventually have a leak problem.

I never heard of a station pumping just Foam.
Yeah Diesel will foam up, but it dies down quickly, just the nature of the stuff.
I have owned a Diesel vehicle since 81, drove all kinds of Diesel equipment, so I have fill up a lot of them.
This 86 F-250 I drive as a DD, the last 3 gallons was always a pain to fill. Someone will throw in here, when it clicks off, just stop, that`s where it is filled and for expansion.
I always fill to the tippy top, and drive off, never had an expansion problem or leakage on the ground.
When I installed the 38 Gal tank, installed a new Roll Over Grommet so I had good fresh rubber. Screw in a threaded/barb elbo fitting.
Then at the top on the side of the Filler Tube, drilled a hole, then enlarged it just enough so a threaded/barb Brass fitting would just catch the opening and thread in.
Be sure to rough up the metal around the hole, and throw on some JB Weld. Then connect a vent hose to both fittings. (Do not use Heater Hose). Purges the air as fast as the fuel goes in.
Fills fast and has worked great.
EDIT:
I used 3/4" hose, 1/2" would probably work also.
Air is coming out the Fill Tube as well as the new vent Hose.
Some of the trucks (I have an 86) have the vent tube inside the Full tube as I have read. Maybe the newer trucks? IDK. I didn`t have that to remove.
Vents are important as is this controlled experiment.
