Ive seen a couple built. My question right now is how do you gut one out? This is as far as I’ve gotten. Nothing else seems to be coming loose

You have to cut the parting line weld between the 2 halves along the Outer diameter of the Converter to take it apart. Normally done in a Lathe.

I've been eyeing that too. Talking to a guy that has a centrifuge listed for sale, but he doesn't seem too interested in selling it. So still interested in the project, and being frugal like I am, I looked into homemade options. I stumbled across a thread on steel soldiers https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/homemade-centrifuge.112814/ about using a torque converter. Sadly, I've scrapped all my old converters out because I had no use for them, otherwise I'd have the project started.

With those home made jobs, they all seemed to complain about balancing it. Looking at your cuts, I'd say you're going to have trouble with it too. IDK how fast you plan on spinning yours, but most of the electric motors I have laying around are 3000+ rpm units. Now I have little experience at this, but to spin that fast I feel you'll want to be balanced nearest to 0 that you can be.

Once I get the mount made I'll turn that opening to true it up

I bet you could get a old junk torque converter from a transmission shop for pretty cheap. Probably core price. 15-20$. Might be worth calling around. Just a thought.

Good work man!

Hey kbenz, any updates? I just found a big torque converter on the side of the highway and snagged it up. Thinking I might copy your endeavor. I will take your advise and cut it with a lathe and reweld. I need a second fuge lol!

Thanks for the update. What flow rates are you shooting for?
I was thinking about building one and make it able to flow more. I think it's really comes done to motor size and clean side out pipe size. At least that is what I was seeing with my current fuge. Really limited by .5inch out.

Haven’t even thought about flow rate honestly. I’m using the top half of a cut down 55 gallon drum. So I’ll have the original bungs to use
