Hello guys my 92 f-250 will not start unless I give it a shot of Ether and when it starts i get a gray smoke not heavy but it’s there I’ve changed the injectors o rings and fuel filter. I would like to advance the timing but I’m not sure of how to do it and also how do I check for power to the glow plug

I would start with the glow plugs, and worry about the timing afterwords if it is still a problem.Light gray smoke is normal when using ether. The easiest way to test the glow plugs is with a test light, and all you have to do is place the ground clamp of the test light on a positive battery terminal, then remove the glow plug connectors and touch the test light to the glow plug,if they are good it will light up.To test if you are getting power to the glow plugs, remove all glow plug connectors and place the test light ground clamp on a negative battery terminal, then touch the test light to the inner part of the connector while the glow plugs are cycling, and it should light up if all is well.

Also all it takes is one or two bad glow plugs to make them start hard. I would suggest stop using ether unless you are 100% sure glowplug system in not working at all. Still it is better to find the problem and get it working right again.

If you hear the clicks right after you turn the key on, then you're on the right path with the glow plugs and controller.
