What is this spring thing?

It is factory, on all of mine, so should be attached. Use a pair of needle nose pliers or hemostats to wiggle it back in there. Not hard to do. You are doing really good at checking out the small stuff there.
Mine are all non-turbo & I put a rubber mat over the air filter covers to keep water out of the intake.

Thank you Rick...detail is one of my skills in dentistry.

Wait just a cotton-pikin-minit.....

@Haulinhorse

That arm the spring is attached to. Right up top, does it have a rod attached to it going back to the transmission? I wouldn't think it would on your truck, but that would be a C6 if it does, which would definitely explain why you feel "like it should have another gear".....

Can you post a picture of the tag on the door jamb with all the codes on it?

I'm a little bit unsure on this too. The profile pic is of an OBS truck, but her sig says it's a 1988. If it's a 1988, it's probably a C6. If it's a OBS, I would lean toward an E4OD. The pump could have been take off of a C6 truck before she bought it.

Ok. I just went back and looked at her the pictures in her first post again and there's definitely a kickdown rod showing. This is a C6 transmission. The IP also has the earlier style of bass return fitting on the top of it. The later style has a square body like in Seladoor's picture. Of course that could have been changed out. The square style has a 1/4" barb and connects to the return caps while her style has a 5/16" barb and had a steel hard line that runs along the intake manifold like a 6.9 does.

My 89 has a C6.

But I am not certain it came from the factory, that way.

One of these days I'll get a pic of the door tag, and find out.

I've seen both transmissions in a 1989. It's probably factory. A good clue would be to look for the transmission wiring that's no longer attached if someone swapped a C6 in place of a E4OD.

Yeah,it is confusing. The body is a 90 something,,,,guy I bought it from said when he was restoring,these parts were more available BUT the VIN and title say 88 F250...is that possible? Reminds me of the Johnny Cash song where he worked in a car factory for yers and took piece by piece out in his lunch bucket and built himself a car over the years...lol

Yep. It's possible. A friend of mine used a 1988 cab on this 1997 project. By the way, the smaller inner spring shouldn't be there. Just the larger (diameter) outer spring. It's just to help keep the rod from sticking in the down position. If it did, it would shift like you always had your foot on the floor. Late shifts at high RPMs.

All 3 of my trucks have both springs and they are factory. I'm 2nd owner. 1st owners took everything to the dealer because they were diesels.
