Well if it's at the axle, that's what sets the preload on the pinion bearing. So....

If it is the axle pinion yoke nut. Then the pinion can move around chewing up the reared or letting the yoke walk around. Yoke could come apart and drop the drive shaft on the ground and maybe lock up the rear end.

If it's off the transmission it here again could drop the drive shaft and/or chew up splines on the yoke or shaft.

I'd be getting it figured out sooner than later.

I got it figured out. It went on the yoke off the trans. Thank for everyone's quick replies. Nice to have a place to get some actual answers. Y'all are awesome!

Glad you found it. Also glad it didn't come all the way off and use your drive shaft to pole vault you!
