do you take your IDI on long trips?

I take mine on long distance trips as often as time and money will allow. Not cross country.. but into the back country of UT, NV, ID, MT and WY. Oftentimes during the colder months and usually solo. I love exploring and so far this truck has done a great job of helping me get out there. The...

Explain this one (loosing coolant... sorta)

Thanks again ;Sweet With the clamp tightened down (I must have not gotten it tight enough the other day when I replaced the heater hoses) and the antifreeze cleaned off of the heater core so far I have not seen or smelled any leaks. We'll see how long that reservoir stays full! LOL

Explain this one (loosing coolant... sorta)

Thanks for the reply's everyone its been very helpful. I'm thinking I'd better pressure test everything to get a better idea of what's going on. Oh man, if the heads or block are cracked that would suck really really bad! Sorry for the novel but I should probably add a little history to...

Explain this one (loosing coolant... sorta)

Hope they enjoy it that ELC aint cheap!! LOL No signs of dried coolant anywhere. No hissing sounds or bubbling. On that note in recent history I've installed a new Motorcraft water pump, all new hoses, and a new Champion radiator. None of which made any difference in helping this...

Explain this one (loosing coolant... sorta)

If I fill up my coolant overflow reservoir to the mark it will slowly use up the coolant up until the reservoir is empty. Sometimes within just a few hundred miles. That said the coolant in the radiator will never get below 3/4" of an inch below the radiator cap no matter how many miles I...

    Fuel filter heater?

Random thought.. My VW recirculates fuel from the return lines through the fuel filter to warm it up.. Works good I think. Wonder if something like that is possible/worthwhile on the IDI :dunno

Damnit....You may call me the torque master now....

Yeah, I had to turn it a few times to get it just right, but it worked and kept working for years.

Damnit....You may call me the torque master now....

I overtightened that on my last starter and it spun as well. Would not crank over.. Spun it back and it worked for years ;Sweet Fwiw I'm running a Powermaster now and very happy with the results.

    Elevation change

I'm not too far from Jackson.. The elevation changes around here are pretty significant and it's easy to gain a couple thousand feet in a short drive. What you're seeing is pretty typical of a N/A IDI. My 86 ran great around town but it couldn't get out of it's own way driving through the...

    Best Batteries?

Fwiw I've sworn off Interstate Mega-tron batteries.. Never again. Last three I had (new) swelled up and started leaking within the first year. I've been using CAT batteries (I have no idea who makes these) and they have been awesome. 880 CCA's / group 65. The price was right too...

    Spare engine worth keeping around?

Thanks everyone ;Sweet I think I'll keep it around. Is there anything I can do to keep the thing lubricated? It's been sitting for six years now and I hope that didn't do any damage.. I'm sure the heads and such are dry by now. I'll plan on re-sealing everything for safe...

    Spare engine worth keeping around?

Sorry this isn't tech, but I was hoping to get some advice  For reasons that only make sense to us.. my family and I are moving from our place out in the country to a much smaller place in town. I'll most likely go from having a large shop to a two car garage. I have a used...

Hypermax air filter housing adapter (info needed)

That's not a bad idea. Do you put it directly in front of the filter? My only concern would be more restriction. The 088 box is a little undersized as it is imo. Thanks for the heads up.

Hypermax air filter housing adapter (info needed)

I run the Napa Gold 6128's. Super common filter. Used on several Ford vehicles in the 90's I wrote the size on my core support.. I always forget the number. https://www.atsdiesel.com/pdf/air-filters-ats-turbos.pdf

Hypermax air filter housing adapter (info needed)

Not sure on that one. It would be super tight but I'm sure it's been done before. With a pre filter the open element might not be a bad option. Thanks for the suggestion. Thats the one thanks for the pic. Just looking at it I think it would work with my turbo. I might give Hypermax a...

Hypermax air filter housing adapter (info needed)

I go through the flat filters like crazy I probably change at least a half dozen per year. I can shake the debris off them but even then there is a lot that won't come off. My truck spends a lot of time on dirt roads and it can be super dusty out here in the Utah deserts. I'm thinking about...

    ford frustrated

If it hasn't been mentioned already I'd recommend rebuilding the fuel filter head. Given the age it's probably due. It is pretty simple to do once it is off the truck. Mine had a bad check valve (it's inside the little brass nipple---the one with a 5/16" hose on it that goes from the head to...

Gear reduction starter, starts like a new truck

Just installed the Power Master 9050. Holy smokes! Should have done this a long time ago ;Sweet Any tips for tightening that top bolt? I thought it was tough on the Mitsu starter.. this one is definitely worse. Tried a wobbly but it doesn't fit. Thinking a crows foot or something? :dunno
