ZF S5-42 and ZF S5-47 years

What years and Ford models were these transmissions put in?

dont know the years but

They were behind the 7.3 diesels in F450's

Early ones were ZF S5-42 meaning 420 lb-ft, later ones S5-47 good for 470 Lb-ft.

The 42 was from late '87 to mid '96 and the 47 from mid '96 to as far as '01 rarely.

Four bell patterns made for use with the 300 in the F-150 and 300/351 in the 250+, a 460 bell for the 250+, a 7.3L pattern, and a modular pattern for the 5.4L/6.8L in the '99+ superdutys.

These bells, were they bolted onto the transmission (I.E. exchangeable) or were they molded as part of the transmission?

Also note the 42 is a closer ratio box than the 47.

Gasser 42s and 47s are the same with ratios of

1st: 5.72
2nd: 2.94
3rd: 1.61
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.76
Reverse: 5.24

and

S5-42 (Diesel)
1st: 4.14
2nd: 2.37
3rd: 1.42
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.77
Reverse: 3.79

S5-47 (diesel)
1st: 5.08
2nd: 2.61
3rd: 1.53
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.77
Reverse: 4.66

I thought the S5-42 was IDI only and the S5-47 was PSD only? That would make the switchover year '94, not '96...or, am I mistaken?

94 and 95 PSDs got the S5-42. That's what I have in mine.
