YAY! more E4OD fun! no tach, stuck in 2nd and drive?

well i went to take the 250 today, the tach wasn't working and the OD light was on realllly dim, if i hit the button it wouldn't turn on or off... if i put the trans in drive it would try to pull out in drive, if i put it in first it would start in second then if i shifted to drive it would only go in drive. wouldn't downshift either. any ideas? i was thinking tach sensor or TPS sensor. the OD light has been blinking since i got the truck but it shifted ok when not in OD. and Autozone could not get a tach sensor. any ideas on what it may be?

If the OD light was not on dim I would say tach sensor. Since its lit dim I'm gonna take a guess that you might have a blown fuse or bad ground somewhere. Start with fuses, next make sure the TCM is connected nice and tight out under the hood and last make sure all the gounds are good. The transmission is doing what it is suposed to when the computer is either offline or in limp mode. If it where in limp the light would be flashing away. I think the TCM is down for some reason. BTW, TCM is a fairly tough piece so dont just blame it rite away.

I've found that the stock connector to the Tach sensor is crap too and will go bad. I just have my soldered in now. A new sensor from ford is around 50 dollars last I checked. They should have them as they used the sensor on the powestrokes for a while too.

No tach is a classic symptom of a dead tach sender, which sends the trans into the 2nd and OD only limp mode you're now experiencing. The sender is dealer-only part, will run you between $60 and $75 from Ford, and I think more from IHC, but do check with both just to make sure you're getting the best deal. The pre-'92 trucks do not blink the OD light as it's not programmed into the TECA/TCM/PCM/ECM/whateveryawannacallit, it is possible your '92 has one of these older units controlling the trans.

Check the bulkhead connector on the passenger side of the transmission, and the relay that powers the PCM.

should there be power going to the tach sensor? the plug is dead. i got a working tach sensor off a parts engine and still nothing, all fuses are ok, all connections are tight, the PCM is clean and tight. should i cut the plug off and solder the wires together to eliminate that possible issue...?

I still think you have a power supply problem relating to the PCM. I've heard of symptoms like this before, but since my truck is a retrofit E4OD swap, I'm not sure where the relay for the transmission computer is.

Anyway, thats what I would check to make sure the PCM is getting enough power.

Not true. My 90 had a light flashing like mad when my E4OD died. They just do not have the ability to store codes.

I do not have a schematic anymore (I sold all that when I sold the truck). I would try to find a way to get one and make sure the TCM is getting power. The OD light dimly light has me concerned about that. Sorry I could not be of more help.
BTW, I had the E4OD in my 90 bulletproof when I sold it. I wish I took that trans out before I traded it in.

Check # 8 fuse by your knee (also controls the dome lamp) for giggles. Mine did the same thing.

fuses all looked good.... where are the grounds located i'll start cleaning them, wheres the power wires at? i'll check them too....

F@#$%$ grounds! i pulled all the engine bay grounds, wire wheeled em, used some di-electric grease, and cleaned the engine bay fuse block power wire. i turned the key and started it, tach jumped to life and the light was off! took her for a spin, OD still kicks the blinking code but i can still use it w/out OD.
