What's this plug for?

The threaded plug I have circled, where does it go, the water jacket? Maybe that would be a better place to install my mechanical water temp gauge, since it's super easy to reach on a van if you remove the doghouse cover, and I can leave the factory gauge hooked up in it's own port. Or is it too close to exhaust, where it would give a bad reading?

Yes it's a water jacket I used it for my mechanical gauge and left factory one hooked up also.

Thanks.

On my F250, I used the factory dummy light port, since it was easy to reach and I didn't know there was another unused port. The dummy light sensor is too hard to reach on a van, so the factory gauge sensor was my intended place.

But now that I just noticed that extra port from the pic I took in February, that would be an even better place. The oil leak from above has been fixed, it was a bad rubber hose for the valve cover vent, so that isn't dripping down anymore.

If that's on the drivers side, which it looks like it is. That's the port that is used on the passenger front (IDI's use the same head either side) for the supply to the heater core. So that is direct hot water right out of the head. It might not be the exact same temp as the factory locations, but close enough, like a few degrees. It will be more than good to tell what temp you are running.

Yes, that's the driver's side rear, right by the throttle pedal on vans. The arrow is pointing to the valve cover hole in the pic previously posted.
