I posted an ad on Craig's List looking for a Dana 60 front axle to put under my truck. I had somebody respond back asking me if a Super Duty 60 will work. What is the Super Duty 60 and will it fit under my truck? I heard that the Super Duty trucks use a different lug pattern that my older eight lug, so will I have to get different rims for the front if I do put this axle under it? Thanks guys.

not 100% on this but I bet they are talking about the new dana 60. They are dana 60's and they are strong, but non of the parts will interchange between our body style dana 60's and the newer ones. different bearings, brakes, the whole 9. You could put it under yours but check to see what it came out of before you get it. 99 or newer and its a metric lug pattern and you rims wont fit.

my very own hell
Unless tis the old SuperDuty, but those were 10-bolt wheels IIRC, dunno if the outers can be changed to 8-bolt hubs.

I'll find out more tomorrow when I call the guy. I might have a Dana 60 out of a '86 F350 with 4.10 gears (exactly what I need to make the swap easy) for $500. It doesn't have brake calipers or hubs, but I think all my stuff from my IFS axle will go right on it.

Wouldn't you like to know
Superdutys are a diffrent bolt pattern. Only the Duallys got a Dana 60 front from 99-01 & 02-04 were 60s in all trucks with leaf springs. Then they came out with a Super Dana 60 that used coil sprins from 05+
Getting a 05+ Dana 60 on a 92-97 isn't a super huge deal, it's not a 2 hour bolt on thing but it can be done. You would have to get a rear to match if you wanted to rotate the wheels though.

kenneth. I dont think you ifs stuff is gonna work on the 60. I (again) am not 100% on that but I have seen a **** ton of axles apart and the stuff looks almost identical then it wont bolt up. on the plus side though if you bought all the stuff new or reman your front end wouldnt need work for quite awhile ( the old tech addage "pay me now or pay for it later".

I thought that I'd just be able to roll the Dana 60 under my leafs and bolt it on, hook up the steering linkage, brakes, and roll with it. How hard is it going to be to change it out with a 60?

Your brakes and wheel hubs will work no problem, your existing steering will work in a pinch, but it isn't ideal.
For an on road only truck, you may be able to get away with the stock TTB driveshaft, the one on my play truck JUST clears the crossmember at rest. The F350 dual cardan shaft is the way to go.
You can re-use your springs, but, if my truck is any example, it's going to ride like a lumber wagon.

i thought that the newer 60's didnt have enough axle tube coming out of the center section for our trucks since they moved the springs out on the newer ones. that and your spindles can work on a 60 but are not ideal and not reccomended. if you look at the lip that goes through knukle it is to short on the D50 spindels to work on a 60 knuckle. i think you are asking for a big project wiht miss and match parts there.

go look up Mr. N on pirate4x4, he is a respected axle guru and can point you in the right direction. you could probubly even search out the needed info.

I talked to the guy today and it's a Dana 60 from a '99-'01 F350. He owns a business that builds axles and transmissions (The name is something Gearworks). He said that the spindles are different between the Dana 50 and the Dana 60, but that he has an older Dana 60 and that those spindles will interchange. He'll gear it with 4.10 gears, and build it so that it will roll right under my truck for $1,250. He said I might want to check my "tracking bar" to make sure it will work. He also has a remanufactured ZF5 for $950 with something back as a core (he will accept my old C6 as the exchange). He also said that he knows where I can get a gear vendor for that ZF. I'm busting @$$ now to gather up the money to get this done, but are these good prices for the parts? Let me know what you guys think about these prices and I'll go from there on it.

I thought your new truck IS a 350, so why would ya need to put a D60 in it? Am I missing something?

On the prices, I'd have to say $1250 for even a rebuilt one with new gears and diff bearings is a little high if it doesnt come with the track bar. If you're converting to a D60 from a IFS then you'll need the track bar, AND the track bar bracket that bolts to the engine crossmember.
You must be registered for see images attach

I gave $800 for this D60 axle, and aside from the rust that was on the housing, its like new. The gears hardly look like they have been broken in. But I also know I stole this one. The track bar is the thick straight bar running from the passenger axle tube towards the center housing, and the track bar bracket I was talking about is that thick cast iron triangular piece attached to it. Those pieces are VERY important to anyone doing a D60 swap. The bar itself is $150-200 from a salvage yard. And then getting them to give you the bracket as well can be a chore, plus look at it costing you another $100 atleast. Not that I'd know. I bought my axle from a guy that stripped a truck and didnt want it. So I lucked out and got everything I needed.

price for the axle sounds a little on the spendy side but if he is setting up new gears and making it an easy bolt in it dousent sound out of range. see if you can get a trach bar out of it, those smaller parts can nickle and dime the price up quickly. just make sure it is a real 60. i think they did something similar with the newer trucks being solid axle with a 50 center and 60 like outers.

It's been a few days since I've been on because my internet was having issues. I have the IFS front end. D60 axles started going under them in '86 and mine is a '85 F350. I think I'll just stick with what I have for the time, and wait until I come across someone that doesn't know what they have sitting in that ol' "parts truck".
