what rear gears

so i was wondering what yall are running for rear gears i got a 4:10 but would like to make first gear more usable and i think i saw something bout someone running 3:08 if so what your rpm at 55? any help whould be great

It all depends what you do. When I tow my backhoe around town, I need all of first gear to get the 28,000lbs rolling. I know you are not supposed to do this but everyone does something they're not supposed to. I need my 4:10's and want a brownie auxillary trans. My last truck had 3:55's and did 80@2200rpms. I forget what that was at 55, but the new owner is consistently getting 18-19mpgs. He drives real easy and isn't in any of a hurry. That is a '92 f250 4x4 natural,e4od, reg cab.For a highway driver, 3:08's would rock and your 2wd 5 speed would make them shine I'm sure.

yea i think a 3:08 would nice was going to leave it a 4;10 and make it 4x4 but looks like i might be getting a 1980? f-350 dually 2 door and im going to make that my off road truck i dont tow anything big like that but i do tow some horses every now and again anything else yall can tell me on 3:08 would be a big help josh

Just a heads up, recently I looked about a month for 3.08 gears for a ford 10.25 (long or short pinion), and it appears nobody manufactures them anymore. For '92 and up 2WD you can get a 3.31 r/p from some places. Us 91 and older owners could use those 3.31 gears with a different yoke, but that made it more expensive than it was worth to me. I went the 3.55 route. Those 3.31's ought to be sweet for runnin down the highway empty!

If you do any kind of towing, I wouldn't go any shorter than 3.55's.

well i dont really tow maybe a 2 horse trailer im just trying to up fuel millage i already get 21 to 23 highway and i got 4;10s be very interested i seeing what a 3;08 can do for me ill be ordering 1 as soon as i have the funds

If you manage to find a place that stocks 3.08's, go ahead and let this board know. I called every site I could find online that had em posted for sale and everyone was out with no way to get any!
