I have a 93 F350 Duelly 7.3 IDI bone stock new inj pump at 220000 and new injectores at 275000 this is a zf5 speed with solid flywheel conversion at 275000 used to tow a 32 ft fifth wheel 14000 pounds with a 2500 pound pin weight we were pulling today in 90 degree wheather and the temp gauge was between the R and the M started to panic cause usalley reads around the N or O so pulled over first chance and poped the hood shot the rad intake and water pump nothing over 195 degrees what temp should it be running at I know I need a real gauge but am on the road and wont be able to tackle that for at least 700 miles until we stop for the summer in SD so all you guys with real gauges non turbo please respond

Mine sits at about 190-195 all day. I don't pull much, but when I do it usually gets to about 210. If it goes past that it is not going to stop rising until I get out of it a little, then it starts going back down.

It probably should be mentioned where the temp is being recorded from.

I run about 207*F (7k curb weight) with a SW mech gauge and the probe is in the factory overheat location.

205* -210* from the overtemp switch location running empty.

Now sure what I am running in the factory location., but I would imagine it's 5 or more degrees cooler.

205*-210* here myself.....that's straight water that was in it when I got it, haven't had the chance to change it out.

High end of normal on these motors is 237* if I remember right. I can hit 230 pulling a long grade and have yet to see any ill effects. When I first got the truck it scared me as I was used to a newer truck that never went over 210 no matter what I threw at it. I've talked to people who say their motor lives in the 235-240 range under a big load and they had over 450,000 on the motor treating it that way on a regular basis. I am turbo'd which adds more heat but I would not worry about it running a little warmer under the conditions you are describing.

Diesel engine coolant temperature at the top of the radiator where hose attaches after high rpm or under load condition for 20 minutes should be (195-237*F) 91-114*C

Motorcraft thermostat E5TZ-8575-C (part# used today:RT1049) = 192* fully open = 212*

it's important to let the idi run in its normal operating temp,because this is when you set the timing.you set the timing @ the normal operating temp because this insures a complete burn.
max fuel economy and performance is found @ 210-240.
if your under 240 degree's,run 'er.

mine runs around 210 empty,and 225+ loaded up.fans set to kick on @ 235F -which cool me down way too fast.probably ******* head gaskets.i need to slow the puppies down,down,down.
whatever you do,don't let anyone tell ya e-fans (proper ones) wont keep your engine .

My camper runs 180* cruising the highway (180* IH Thermostat)


Under full load, hills, high winds etc. Never seen it go past 210* Fan clutch locks in around 200 and stays locked untill the temps go back down around ~185.

I run 190 in the stock sender hole, I have seen 240 for 6 miles on a long grade, dont like it but, I like the temp gun idea, now just to get the wife to ride the hood !!!!

been running in the 205-210 range lately unloaded, i have mine in the "stock sensor" location. i did shoot the rad with the engine running reading in the 210 range and the IR told me 185 at the top inlet of the rad and 160 at the bottom. seems a little warm for my blood.

edit: sorry sensor location is in the stock sensor location not overtemp.

I don't have any numbers for it, I installed it about 5 years or so ago.

I just walked in an IH dealer and asked for a 180* for these engines, they had 1 in stock, I took it.

Can someone post pictures of the ports they have the gauge hooked to ? I was going to put one in the port on top of the water pump but couldn't get the plug to break loose and have no clue where else I can hook it to. Any help would be helpful

Also which port tells the best reading ?

IIRC the overtemp switch is above a or two exhaust valves and it will get the hottest the fastest. This is why the overtemp is here....it will tell you to shut things down before you can blow her up.

The water pump plug is coolant coming back INTO the water jacket, so it is BOUND to be cooler than the actual water temperature.

To get a good coolant temperature reading, I would remove the factory sender (not the overtemperature sender) and place my new probe in there...

But that's just me!
