Located under the hood, on the extreme right-side, close to the fire-wall, is a vacuum-operated plunger/solenoid that opens/closes a door when MAX or NORM A/C is selected.

I ?think? it closes off outside air in MAX A/C mode.

Anyway, the one on my truck had quit working; so, I simply removed the unit and zip-tied the lever in MAX A/C position (door closed --- I assume).

Now that colder weather has arrived, what, if any, consequence will this have when using the heater/defroster ??

Also, I would like to buy a new one of these; however, I cannot find a listing for it on ROCK AUTO, nor do I know the proper name or part # for it.

Many thanks.

That LOOKS right, and I see no reason it wouldn't work. I found a technical drawing on TDS (not sure if I'm allowed to link over there so I refrained) that lists the Ford designation for the part as 18A318. That being said, I don't know the first cluster of numbers/letters for the part. NPD's catalog confirms this as the number.

The one in NPD's catalog that looks identical to the one on my '85 heater plenum is listed at $12.50. LMC also has the plenum-mounted one for $19.95. I think the Amazon one would work fine.

The one I have looks exactly like the Warden's does on his site over here: http://www.dieselwarden.net/ford/coolbypass.html

your defroster will not work nearly as well, and it will start to get a bit wiffy heating the smelly cabin air after a while.

but that's about it.

Thanks; that Amazon one looks like it would be workable.
