Typical Mechanics truck

So we loaded up to go camping last week, left friday, got about 25 miles into a 160 mile round trip and pulling into the breakfast stop, the clutch blew up, pedal to floor, banging and noises from the area.
Expletives, turned heading out, went ahead and had breakfast. Michelle was driving the jeep so we had a tow vehicle, lol
Opted to drive to the campground starting engine in first and floating gears all the way. Made it there, put the tcase in low, backed into spot. Left today and headed home , the traffic gods were in my favor for a change, 86 miles, two full stops. yay. 3 if you count the driveway back in, but it was really pissed and I doubt it will leave the yard under its own power, it made a huge bang and the sun was out and a cloud of metal filings was floating in the air.
Ill post pics of the carnage when I tear it apart.

Got the wife to camping spot which was the most important goal.

Wow. Okay. So if you had power but no clutch action and metal.... I'm at a loss. It's got to be impressive though!

sounds like when my TOB grenaded a couple years ago

Ooo. Yep. Tob would do it. He didn't loose power so couldn't have been the entire pressure plate. I love puzzles!!

I had a similar thing happen one day but not quite that dramatic. Pushed in clutch, went kapow and pedal got soft. No release. Original 91 clutch and DMF with 140,000 miles. The diaphragm spring cracked. Fun driving home with no clutch! No time to hunt a SMF kit, so pulled trans and put in the original pressure plate from my 90 I had. I hadreplaced it when I rebuilt the engine in the 90. It didn't chatter or act up and ran fine for a couple years till the DMF started going and I replaced the whole mess with a SMF.

ford IDI trucks. slower than molasses, but you will go home. and in the end, that's really what counts.
scattered a TOB in Fresno, CA. running 17k/lbs gross. got home floating gears. finished the tow. collected the dough. limped home for repairs. anytime you make it home on your own is a good day

TRUTH...I made it on 7 cylinders. Window shopping on Sunday and I keep backing up on 6.0 given Ron's run of luck and keep thinking I just need an IDI. Actually looked at a OBS ECLWB stroke and .... gas motor SD.

Hmmm....floating gears on zf....thats bad ju ju from what I hear....don't get me wrong...I routinely do it just so I CAN do it if need arrises....cause you never know.....

floating gears on a ZF is very bad because only the surface of the gear is heat treated hardened. once the surface layer of the gear is worn away, the wear on the gear accelerates quickly. that is why I advocate only do it when you absolutely need to do so. only you can be the judge. I sell used ZF's for $750. a towing a loaded towtruck from Fresno to SJ will cost me 6 hours @ $275/hr. the motivation to float gears home is pretty strong for me as a result. your results may vary and only you can be the judge of that risk.
