Turning up the pump

On average how far should you turn up the pump on an idi 6.9 N/A?

The truck is a regular cab 4x4 4speed, most it hauls is maybe some crap in the bed. less than 1000 lbs.

Some may disagree, but my answer is...

far enough to see light smoke when you floor it.

Lots of black tar comming out the tailpipe isn't worth the power gain, IMO.

20 mph in 4th, that's just asking for trouble, even before you flood it down with a full pedal's worth of diesel...

ok, like 25-30 mph.

That's 1000-1300 rpms in 4th gear w/ 4.10s and 235/85R16 tires

well, that's a little better than the 800ish rpms I calculated... The real question that hasn't been asked is, do you have a pyrometer?

no, I plan on getting one at some point. But like I said, this truck doesn't haul much of anything. It's my beater 4x4 truck.

I wouldn't want you to unnecessarily make soup out of your pistons because you didn't have a pyro, but if you haven't turned it up already, hold off for the gauge. If you have, go easy on the old girl 'till you get some instrumentation.

Um, why do you want to throw smoke?

I would expect that flooring the engine at 1000 RPM will already make it smoke a lot. Not sure that turning up the fuel will help much.

Not hauling weight doesn't mean that you can't hurt the truck or the engine.

I guess for what you want to do, you can turn it all the way up (1/4 turn back from bottoming out), but just to be clear, you are completely at fault if the engine blows a gasket or something else. Don't blame this forum or anyone on it if something goes wrong, so consider this your official warning.

I think 3 flats is too much but thats my opinion. What I would ask is that you go one flat at a time and retry it.

An allen wrench has 6 sides, so 3 flats would be a half turn. I'm turboed and only turned mine up two, and won't go any further without other mods (i.e. intercooler, etc.). Black smoke equals higher EGT's, and higher EGT's equals higher chance of "meltdown". I wouldn't turn up a NA engine because I doubt you'll get any benefit out of it. Just my opinion.

I really do wish that it wasn't the sole purpose of a lot of people to see how much black smoke they can blow. The EPA already makes enough rules and regulations and the next car or person you drown in black soot you have no ideal where or for who they work. Its just asking for more regulations.

I only turned mine up to because of having the turbo. I barely blow any black smoke even under hard acceleration. I don't understand the blowing excess smoke thing either.

Please don't. It is a waste of fuel, is ******* your tranny and engine, not to mention IT LOOKS STUPID AND YOU MAKE EVERY DIESEL TRUCK OWER LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT! Trust me.......no one thinks it is cool.

Yes! A stock N/A IDI with the stock IP settings can and will make dangerously high EGT's when pushed. What do you think will happen when you add more fuel? Without a pyro...............any increase in fuel is too much. But it's your truck.........do whatever you want.
