Turbo types

Are there more than one type of turbo used on a 1st gen powerstroke? I have one with the mounted pedestal for the oil feed that came out of an OBS (don't remember the year), and I'm buying a 1997 7.3 with no turbo. Just curious if my current turbo will work, or will I have to find a different one?

Why would you want an SD turbo on an OBS? The SD guys want OBS turbos.

Oh... guess I had it backwards. I thought that since the SD HPOP was an OBS upgrade, the turbo would be too.

There aren't many "upgrades" for the OBS Garrett turbo. You can buy a smaller turbine housing like the 1.0 A/R which will help it spool faster but if you are running larger injectors you can run into EGT issues with a tighter housing. Best upgrades are aftermarket turbos but they come at a price.
