truck only starts on ether

ok i know its not good...... but i have to at the moment...

anyways nothing seems to have changed....

the wait to start light stays on the same amount of time and i even been pluging it in when its below 20*

starting last week i had to start giving it ether fires right up.

so it has to be glow plugs.. i did hook a bypass switch but thats been done since day one so no change... also had new glow plugs about a year ago.. (+/-10k miles)

suggestion before i go play in the cold to figure it out.....

everything is good up to the glow plugs power and continuity just went and checked... i did notice the volt gauge dont drop near as much as it use to with the plugs on so looks like next step is to pull and inspect plugs

Might want to see if that block heater is working as well. I have mine on a timer for about three hours before I leave. I don't need the the glow plugs at all to start the rig when the block heater is used

Also, how's the batteries and starter? Is it spinning the 'ol IDI over well?

Pump/injector condition and timing can affect starting as well. Truck run pretty good otherwise?

the block heater was new when i installed it(less then a year ago) and it makes a little arc sound when i plug it in... but im wondering if maybe when i installed it if i happen to put it aginst the block and now it wont heat the coolant?

good hot batterys 2100 cca and just put a new starter in it because it was tired and i thought that was my issue..

truck runs perfect once started and starts right up within a sec once its warm enough to refire on its own.the whole motor is unknown miles but the thing runs top.. i was told form the guy i bought it form it had low miles... the plan is to put new injectors and pump on it in the summer but theres no smoke or anything

well its the glow plugs i must have over heated them and killed all 8 i pulled the 2 front easy ones and they tested bad i only had 2 other used ones to install.. tried to start like that but wasnt enough....

hoping i can find 8 plugs tomorrow yes i know to only use motorcraft

Mind if I ask how you tested the glow plugs once you pulled them out?

I'm having the same sort of problem with truck not starting.

Grounded the and powered the plug with a set of jumper cables they fast so your know if there good

Depends which glowplugs they are and how much common sense the person doing the testing has.

I mean come on, worst case scenario you have to replace the glowplugs that you already thought needed replaced. Otherwise why would you be testing them?!

The ohmmeter method is not 100% accurate.
Bad meters, bad connections, cheap meters, etc.... Too many variables for it to be a guaranteed test method.

Not only it takes 2 secs of hittin it with power and your know, I didn't even let mine glow for a sec.... Same here mine were all bad I didn't test the new ones so who cares I guess

When I did mine the good ones arc'ed and the bad ones didn't do anything so you really don't have to get them glowing

Just check um for continuity. If the meter shows they're open, there's your problem
