truck going haywire, please help

yesterday morning i got a new trailer brake controller professionally installed on my '99. truck ran fine all day yesterday running around town. this morning, i went out and warmed up/thawed off the truck for 10 minutes or so and headed out. 2 miles away the OD light started flashing and it started slam-shifting. so i got to work, pulled it in the shop and thawed it off, disconnected the batteries for a couple hours. i came home for lunch and now not only is the OD light flashing, the truck is cutting out around 2000 rpm, like a bad CPS. i replaced the CPS a few months ago and the torque convertor has only 30000 miles on it.

i'm going to see if i can find someone to pull the codes for me. i need this truck to pull my trailer to 3 hours each way for a job next week. i thought it might be new tranny time but after the engine acting up i'm not so sure. any thoughts?

Get the codes to see whats going on. Take a good look at the brake controller wiring. You might have an issue with that.

If your truck has the trailer tow package the controller is plug and play. If not check all the connection.

Rob who installed the controller? Did they use the plug under the dash and a factory pigtail to the controller? IF so, I'd unplug the controller and see if that makes a difference. Also check the light plug at the rear of the truck for corrosion. I know you've towed trailers before so I bet it's something with the controller.

I know the brake lights (or signal) will unlock the TC. My thinking is that somehow the controller is sending a signal to the trans via the brake light wire.

Rob, are the brake lights working on the back of the truck? What brand is the controller?

my buddys 96 every time it got wet and he used his 4 ways it would send the tranny into limp mode untill it dried out so I would double check any wires recently messed with

on a trailer controller, the brake light signal is an input, rather than an output...
however, if not properly grounded, I've seen a lot of ch!t

i unplugged the controller. started the truck, still in park and the OD light is blinking. i sprayed the trailer connector on the rear bumper with WD40. i guess it's off the the shop.

controller is a draw tite pilot

Rob, Did the installer wire the brake controller into existing-- previously functioning--wiring or run new?

Also does your truck have the plug n play adaptors for lights,brakes etc... or was/is the controller wired just by splicing?

As you guys know, Ferds are real fussy about brake wiring

it's fixed!

turns out the Banks Transcommand box under the truck shorted out. the guy cut it out and rewired the trans back to stock form. then he flushed the trans (it was due). it drives and shifts WAY better now than it EVER did since i've had it.

he said the Banks box was causing the problems with both the engine and the trans. the way it drives now, i wonder if i will see an improvement in fuel milage. really, it's like night and day.

P1747 Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid - Short circuit


The 17xx codes are related to the tranny *****, not so sure why or what set your 1249 code.
