Transfer case trouble

I have a buddy who has a 99 GMC 1500. He said it will not go into 4X4. I had another buddy who had the same problem. When it finally went into gear, there was a chance you would be stuck in 4X4 until the truck felt like going back to 4X2. He sold it before fixing it so I never had a chance to look at it.

Is there a TSB or something to fix this? I know it was more than just a few who had this problem.

i know some of the transfer cases for chevy had problems, it was under warranty and they have to replace the whole rear half. but i think it was towards the 2006 and up with a diesel
