Well I just cant seem to win on this. I bought the fax valley lumi adapter set and bought a mt1480. The mt1480 was missing inductive clamp so I cant use the fox valley set up with it. Also missing the lumi probe and the pluse adapter.

I was hoping that the fox valley probe would fit with the snap on but it doesnt.

Would it be ok to cut the wires from each lumi pick up and splice it together so the fox valley end is on the snap on meter so I can use the probe that I have. It looks like its just 2 wires on each and a shielding wire. I wont be using any other snap on probes so I dont need to worry about them not fitting.

When I put in the RPM pick up lead does it just go in the hole where the 0 mark is or the one to the right of it?

OR does anyone know where I can get the inductive pick up for the mt1480 I know the probes are really expensive and I bet the pick up is too. Or does someone have any spare parts that I could use to make mine work?

I dont really want to just borrow something I would like to have everything I need.

Not to rain on your parade, but if you want everything you need to time the thing, ditch what you have and buy a Ferret. That and an advance timing light and you are good to go with modern technology instead of trying to cobble something together from obsolete equipment.

The Snapon MT1480 is out of fashon. Mel told me no parts are available. I'm looking fr the line clamp probe for mine. I know what the connecter is and am trying to buy one. I have other meters and I hope I can make the line clamp probe fit my 1480. Best asking a snapon dealer about what you want. BTW the crank probe is supposed to fit the hole near the water pump. You can use the meter without any other pickup probes but all you will be able to see or change is the rpm. Without the lumiy or line clamp probe you wont see andtiming degrees on the meter.

Yeah I just might sell it all I think it would work if I wired the fox valley lumi pick up to the snap on one though. Aside from being a little redneck engineered anything wrong with it?

I probably will grab the ferret once I get rid or this stuff or make it work soon.

Mat J if you want to sell the 1480 I might be interested. We could still use my lumy probe and get your truck timed right at least for the time being. About the RPM pickup...I thought it went in that hole where the tach sensor goes...is there anyplace else to put it? Excuse my ignorance.

what im talking about is there are two holes to put the rpm pick up in. The first one on the left it is pretty sloppy in but it will get a reading. The second one i could really get it to go in it was really tight. Just wondering which it is supposed to be in. The first hole is where the 0 mark lines up with.

Maybe check out this thread...it talks about prep for timing probe.

The timing probe goes in the hole with the tall fitting to the right and not in the "O" hole thats a sloppy fit to the left in the pictures. I really have wondered why these motors have the 2 probe locations... Anybody know....:dunno

So are you saying those ports are open holes to the crankcase or does something have to be removed? Scary either way the slightest mistake and you could get your timing equipment caught in the belts very easily.

They are just two "sleeves" on the timing tab. They are used to hold sensor's to set timing, I'm thinking you used the magnetic pickup on a snap-on meter before...those are the holes he's talking about.

One for RPM and one for timing...some systems I've used had two pickups, it gave the RPM and Timing reading on a digital readout, CRT, etc. I've not used one on a diesel, but I'm sure they were built to work with them. I'm talking about a $10,000.00 engine scan tool by makers such as Grizzly, etc. You could turn the distributor and watch the timing change on the screen rather than having to watch for the mark with a timing light.
