Anybody put a C8.3 in a pickup? How about a DT series International? Heck, you're starting out with almost 1000 ft/lbs of torque from the factory. Could make towing fun with tall gears and over 100 mph!

I actually got started on a DT466 into a Super Duty. It didn't get very far, but I know it could fit in a Super Duty. Sold it last month.
There's also a pic of an 8.3 in a 93 F250. All depends on how much you wanna do, and how good at fab work you are.:sly

The better part, you can get 1000hp for what it cost to get a Cummins 6BT to 600hp. A quote I heard from Hypermax on a DT466: 1000hp for 10 grand.:eek:
Depends on what parts and labor you're doing yourself.
1000hp on a DT466 or 6CT is around 2300 pounds of drive train shredding tork.

That is what I am talking about! The only thing I would be concerned about is that thing twisting the frame into a pretzel at that power level. ;burnout
I read about another swap involving a medium duty Kodiak and an electronic 10 or 11 liter Cummins with a 10 speed od. It turned the truck into an animal!

I think the easiest, cheapest, funnest big diesel swap would be a 5 ton 6x6 cut down to a 4x4 with the utility bed swap and 52's. Pull out the 855 small cam non-turbo cummins and bolt a turbo big cam 400 with Jakes right back in it's place.

There you go, Some pretty tough running gear, a very nice shifting full synchro 5 speed, 10K pounds empty weight and 1500 lb/ft doing virtually nothing. Cruise all day at 70 MPH towing 40K pounds with ear plugs in.

Ya know, for an off the wall project that would be a lot of fun. How much are those 6x6s going for on the open market right now?

A friend recently bought 5 of them in non-running condition for $4000 (yes for all 5). The trucks had new axles, trannies, engines and a miriad of taxpayer money spent on them. Non-running condition meant the batteries were dead. Every one of them drove 250 miles home without a hitch.

He had to buy 52's and wheels which run about $500 for a set of four and a set of front leaf springs and brackets to use in the rear, another $100. The utility trailers for beds run a couple hundred at auction as well.

All in all you can build one of these including a $2K big cam 400 and the 52's for a few grand or less.

They have zero creature comforts though. You'd be more comfortable driving a Cat D6 down the road.

I drove a KW K100 cross country, so a rough ride doesn't bother me so much, especially if you use it to run around local. I think a first gen Dodge dually has probably the worst ride unloaded ever (had an 89 and my back still hurts thinking about it). Some modern sound deadening, heating, maybe adjust the gearing a little to slow the motor down, soften the springs a little and that beast could be civil. You're ahead of the game price wise to get in so it could be a good thing.

The ride is great actually. With 52"s of rubber you don't need any suspension and the steering is actually really good for a truck that size, better than most lifted pickups.

You can't change the gearing, hence the 52's. The comfort deal is the interior is a tin can with a tarp for a roof.

Thanx for the response; now the next question is what auction did your friend go to to do the deed? $800.00 for a 6X6 is a steal; can you post any pics of the trucks?

Fort Lewis, WA. There's atleast one 5 ton 6x6 on my local craigslist right now under $2K. There's one with a dump bed for $2500.

How about a truck with a little more comfort? You can pick up a 2 wheel drive for as low as $4000 with a P-pumped DT466 and Allison or 6 spd manual. Then scour some ads for axles and T-case. The factory IH 4x4s (4800) aren't very affordable, even these days. Could also put an IH body on the 5 ton. That would be killer to have a krew kab IH on some super singles, around a 14.00X22.5, tandems or not.
