So my road slug has been parked for the last 3 months. It all started one day last summer when we got back from work, stopped at the beer store on the way home to purchase a flat of Lucky Lager, the official beer of island spec automotive. As we're standing leaning on my truck drinking beer, one of the guys looks at me and says "Hey Sam, why are there sparks under your truck?"
So I crouched down, looked under the truck, and made my diagnosis known. "That's not sparks, it's on fire!"
So the previously mentioned guy and I crawl under the truck from opposite sides, and throw beer at each other. Then we continued panicking, and eventually dumped a garbage can full of nasty nasty smelling water over my hot motor...So that put the fire out, after a bit of lookin, we realized it was the magnesium in the starter that had caught fire...Replaced the starter, replaced the battery leads, figured we were good to rock onward.
Then it became a ***** to start, requiring 60 seconds+ of cranking to start.
Starter died again a month later.
At the same time my clutch seemed to go for ****, grinding into 4th and reverse, got so bad I had to start it in reverse, and even then it'd be creeping backwards as I cranked it.
I parked it and bought an '84 supra to rip around in.
So I figured it was a pooched clutch master, and maybe an injector pump not putting enough fuel in...
Took it to a shop cause the IP is a bit too complicated for me.
Shop replaced a couple o rings and said the IP was good.
So I came here and asked what everyone thought was wrong.
I was getting ready to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders, and really start tearing **** apart when someone suggested that I check the splines on the clutch linkage.
Thank you whoever it was suggested that, cause that was the problem, rather than spending $200 on parts that I wasn't sure were toast.
Then someone suggested replacing the glow plugs, a whole wack of research this morning on here, I was going to buy a set of autolite GP's but you guys did away with that idea. So I got myself a full set of Beru's for the low low price of $160. Climbed up and started pulling the old ones out...front 4 were Beru's, back 4 were Champions. Checked the previous owner's reciepts, he had a receipt for 8 new Beru GP's installed.
So, with new glow plugs, and the re-splined clutch linkage, my truck is good to pull my 4x4 all summer, and haul dirtbikes.
Thanks OilBurners, you guys are the ****!
ps-can I suggest an addition to the 7.3L FAQ regarding the difficult clutch issue. Right now it says the likely cause is either a cracked firewall or a faulty clutch master....It's definitely worth checking to see if the pedal linkage has slipped on the splines.
