Couple years ago I replaced some steering components and needed to change from a straight zerk to 90* in one spot. The original threads got kind of buggered out as the 90* was a bit bigger. The zerks I have no longer thread cleanly into place
I don’t know enough about tap sizing to determine what size zerk I have and what is the proper tap size to buy. Furthermore I think ( and might be wrong) the 90* zerks I have are 1/4” npt - which have a tapered thread?

At the local hardware store they have a lot of taps but nothing that seems right. Staff is knowledgeable but not sufficiently for my use case

What are my options to get a new greasezerk on the steering?

Shooting from the hip, id say you're pretty well gonna have to roll with it until you replace that tie rod.......unless you can find a zerk fitting that has an odd size...... kinda like the "Wentworth bolts" in the second Cars movie.......

Your biggest problem is that the tin cap on the rod end is thin.
It's probably an 3/16-28 ( you have 28 pitch lt= lubrication thread) from napa
Look for the next size up/down depending on what fits...

Honestly I don't remember.
However the other thing is shrapnel is getting into the rod end, not the end of the world butttttt...
Npt threads will look tapered, or conical .
Machine will look like a non wood non sheetmetal " machine screw.
Lubrication threads also have a taper, different of course.
Last ditch, get a pointed rubber zerk nipple and force in some lube.
Good luck.

What he said.
Also try a metric, made in canaduh aye...
