gas or diesel? if your asking about the tach in a diesel there is no spark ignition system at all in it. they run off extremely high compression, which in turn heats the air in the cylinder to very high temperatures since its under so much pressure, then injecting a bit of diesel in the cylinder to get combustion going. no spark plugs wires caps rotors or distributors needed.

now if its diesel, check the sending unit on your injection pump, which should be somewhere near the oil filler, and then move from there.

What year is the vehicle. If its a PSD, the problem will be the tach itself.
The signal starts at the CPS.Goes to the ECM, then to the tach.
