How about putting a T444 into my truck? It has electronics, right? WIll it fit onto my ZF-5? General thought on this greatly appreciated.

Yes it will go into your truck, but it'll take some work. First off yes, they have an ungodly amount of electronic wiring that go with them. But if you know how to do automotive wiring and working with that type of stuff it will just be time consuming. I think it should bolt up to your motor mounts, but I'm not sure. Its pretty much the same weight as a IDI, maybe a little more so you should be good there. Yes it will bolt up to your ZF. You might have to do some firewall clearancing to clear the turbo and up pipes, but nothing to extremly major.

There is no T444, there is no IH version of the factory turbo 7.3. T444 = T444E which = 7.3 Powerstroke in IH trim(different wiring, less rpm, more tq.)

Drop up to the 7.3 powerstroke forum and follow the guy with the Bronco trying to convert, to get an idea of what a T444E conversion would be like.

The T444E is electronic. No it won't bolt straight up to the ZF5 without the correct adaptor.

The longblock is the same engine as the 7.3 PSD. The differences are in the front cover and acsessory drive, has a coolant filter, the electronics are mounted on the engine, different injectors, IIRC...different turbo and usually an SAE2 or SAE3 bellhousing adaptor.

To drop it in and bolt it up to the ZF5 you will need the complete engine with wiring and electronics, a correct "fly by wire" throttle pedal and a OBS PSD trans adaptor and probably the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate etc from an OBS PSD.

Right there is no T444. The IDI's were International 6.9 and 7.3. The cubic inch name was not used until the new engine block in 1994.

I see no real advantage over using a T444E over a PSD engine. Both need electronics.

I'm not certain, but is it possible that the electronics are "packaged" a little better on the T444E then in the PSD? I seem to recal most of it being on the engine itself, and a lot less of it integrated into the chassis wiring. Which may be why I have seen gensets that use the same engine. However, if you were to get a T444E you'd still have some of the space issues the IDI versions had, with differences in oil pans and what not.

Do you mean that there will be less oil pan clearance with the t444e than my IDI had? One of the reasons I am interested in this engine is that I think it has an air compressor on it.

T444E has the brain box (ECM) mounted on the right side of the block.

As I thought. Yes, you will have to swap oil pans and maybe the oil pickup tube. As for all of this just to get an air compressor, the ol' IDI in an IH S series truck would have had one on it too. All you would need is the bracketry, the compressor, and the extra big pulley for the front of the crankshaft. Maybe a magician to stuff it all under the hood. :dunno
