Static timing question

If I remove the top timing gear cover and turn the engine to TDC and don't see the "Y" I can assume that it is in the down position?

Then if I turn the crank 360* to TDC the "Y" should be straight up? Right?

Or am I looking at this wrong?

If I'm right then if I'm at the second TDC and the "Y" is not absolutely straight up, then the timing gears may not be lined up correctly? Right?

The easy answer is yes but.... Your better off looking down into the cover for the two marks being lined up. Turning the crank 360 degrees is a hit and miss idea without a degree wheel attached to the crank. What are you trying to do???

I'm trying to verify that my timing train is set correctly. I have a blue white smoke issue, and by playing with the timing I have been able to eliminate the smoke up to 2500 rpm. The advance seems to be working and the low speed advance is working. The more I have advanced it the power has really jumped up. And it now starts in what seems like a half a turn of the engine. The guy I got the truck from is known for dicking with things, when in reality he should be hand cuffed when ever he picks up a wrench!
