Starter won't quit running?

I started pickup and the starter kept running. Shut the key off and the motor quit but starter kept running, was not engaging the fly wheel just kept spinning? Had to pull the battery cables to get it to quit. Any ideas on what may be wrong? The starter is only about one year old and is a Mitibushie (SP).

im no expert... but could have snapped the shaft that connects the gear to the starter motor. unlikely. I just dont know how it could keep spinning without engaging with the flywheel. did the starter look any different externally?

I have not had a chance to pull the starter out of the pickup. I was on the way to work when this happened. Will know more tomorow when I get under it and pull starter.

your starter solenoid is bad and sticking keeping the juice going to the starter the one on the fender is the culprit

I would replace it myself because if it was working correctly your starter wouldn't have been getting any power to keep turning but you could put your cables back on and see what happens although leave them loose so you can yank them off quick and take the ignition wire loose so if the starter sticks on again you could pull the ignition wire if it would quit then you have something wrong with the ignition but it probably will keep on going till you cut the juice

There are a few possibilities. One of the two solenoids could be sticking, or there could be an electrical short applying power to one of the solenoids.

IMHO, the fender mount solenoid is less likely to stick because it carries vastly less current than it is designed for (it is designed to carry full gasser starter current). The usual reason that a solenoid sticks is from excessive current which causes the contacts to literally spot weld themselves to each other. That is not to say that it cannot fail.

Quick check - check the continuity between the two large terminals on the fender mount solenoid, if you have continuity then it is stuck. Although often they will un-stick once current is no longer flowing and things cool down.

Next check, unhook the (heavier) starter wire from the fender mount solenoid. Now hook up one of the batteries. If the starter still engages, then the starter mounted solenoid is stuck.

Solenoid on pass fender is energized by ignition sw signal. Once energized, if it hangs, then it will continue to feed the starter motor solenoid because the circuit is straight feed from the batt.

Same for starter motor solenoid, if it hangs, it is straight thru to the starter.

I replaced the fender selinoid and had the starter tested. The starter was toast. Showed the parts man my reciept and he handed me a new starter. Installed the starter and hooked up cabels. Starts just like new
