Spittin White Smoke on Highway

1986 6.9 idi c6 trans

I was headed down the highway going 65 until I saw billowing white smoke from the tailpipe. Truck was running rough and I immediately pulled off. Found something that looks like coolant on the ground. Proceeded to look down the air intake and it’s filled with coolant. Is this a head gasket? Could there be any further damage?

DO NOT try and crank the motor. You could very easily have coolant in one or more cylinders and you could cause serious damage.

I guess yes, it could be head gasket. Unless it’s some thing odd like a blown radiator hose and coolant was sucked in through the air filter housing.

Either way, get the coolant out of the intake and pull all 8 glow plugs before barring the engine over by hand. After a couple of revolutions that way, you can turn it over with the starter, with the fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected.

Pressure test the cooling system and find out where it s coming from.
