Im starting to hate this truck... Lol

So I went to put my new brakes on today and repack the front bearings as they are DRY... Pulled the driverside lock out cap (one of the screws was broke but the broke piece was RTV'd in place so it didnt look broke).. Everything was dry and covered in rust and corrosion. Removed the snap rings and the center gear is seized solid to the stub shaft and it looks like someone has tried to get it off before.

I thinkg @riotwarrior had similar issues... Any chance of getting it apart without cutting the hubs to pieces?

I have access to some D50 hubs so if thats the only way... so be it but would rather not if I didnt have to.

I've tried heat... Ive tried beating... I've tried to split the gear with a chisel... so far, no go.

Thanks for any help.

Yes. The inner most portion that rides on the splines of the stub axle shaft. It won't come off the stub axle and I can't get the hub apart with it in place.

Did you get the single small retainer screw out? There is one with a wide head that holds that assembly's inner ring in place.

If they are factory hubs, they may have an external snap ring.

Yup. Little screw, large external snap rings and the snap ring that holds the inner piece to the axle. I can grab the inner piece and it moves the stub shaft with it. It's seized on the splines.

I read riotwarrior's thread from a while back.. he had a similar problem and he had to cut the hub apart and torch it off/pry it off in pieces... I really dont want to go that route. Lol

I wonder if I could drill through the gear front to back then split it with a chisel... Would save the hub if it works.

May pull the cap back off tomorrow and give it a shot. Cant really hurt.

They are already going to need some clean-up to get a new lock out in place. It may end up getting a new stub shaft down the road.

Ok... so out to the driveway at 7am to try my idea....

Pulled the cap and big snap ring back off...

Carefully center punched the center gear and started with a 1/16 bit.

Same to the other side opposite of the first hole...

Progressively stepped the bit up... I ended up going one size larger but didnt get a picture.

Out came the chisel and the 4#... I gently tapped the chisel into place where it wouldnt move. Got up... drew back and smacked the chisel with some effort. The gear popped. Went to the other hole and did the same but drove the chisel all the way to the base before it completely split.

Got some filing to do on the splines on the end of the stub before a new lock out goes on... but that's ok. I'll take that over replacing everything any day.

And here this little SOB is...

I did find a small snap ring on the back side of the gear on the outside. You can see it in the picture above. I THINK it is to hold the center gear and outer gear together or to keep them from separating. I don't see any way that it could have been holding it in place.

Anyways, I put the outer part of the lock out back in the hub... large snap ring and bolted the cap back on so I can drive it. When I get home this afternoon, I'm going to start taking the other side apart and see if its frozen as well.

It only took 1.5hrs this way... would have been less if I wouldn't have gotten impatient mid way through and broke a drill bit.
