Yes.. The above meter has all the parts needed to time our engines with the lumi probe method. Its not as easy as the pluse timing method but it will tell you what you need to know... It sure beats doing it by ear and getting charged for it.... Hell... anyone can time these idi engines by ear and charge you for it but.... The only person I would trust doing it that way is Mel... He's done so many timing clinics on these rigs I feel he capable of doing this by ear.... I know he prefers to use his snapon mt1480 meter using the pluse method as I do... There is also a kent moore tach n time j33300-a meter that great for doing the same type of pluse method timing. You just clamp it on... Start up the motor and rev to 2000 rpm... The meter tells you timing to 1 10th of a degree as you watch the readouts..... The meter setup is simple. Just press one rocker switch and go for it.... These are the meters that I will be renting out when I get enough of them for members here. The rental fee is going to be $50.00 plus shipping both ways.... Whoever rents these can time as many "friends" rigs as they want. No extra fee to me either. Its your call... Timing should be at least checked once every 30,000 miles and up. These stanadyne pumps do wear and the timing changes as does the injector pressures drop over time. That will increase the advance....

Gary if you rent out something like that you might want to charge a deposit. I know we all have the best of intentions but you never know. I would like to get my truck timed when I get finished up soon. I am hoping it will be close enough to drive though since I haven't changed anything....

This is my thoughts on someone breaking one of my meters. If lets say one of the electrical leads got wrapped up in the belts or fan then that unlucky person can buy that connecter from kent moore but... The magnetic probe that enters the timing location at the vibration dampner is arout $275.00 for replacement. Now if the meter just quits working well who knows when that will happen with any electrical component. That would just be on me. These meters don't have an experation date or some other way to tell you they are all worn out... I should know... I have sevral of them... Some just qiut working and that sucks... Only one location that repairs them and thats in ohio.... Carelessness can't be covered up. I know this group of members is a fine group. So far only one member has ruined a tool of mine even though I told him the injector seat reamer would not ream out the broken off file he had stuck into the injector nozzle port in the head... The tool shows very clearly he tried just that. I will out him later because he didn't even offer to pay for the damages.... Its only money but trust means a lot to me.....

If I borrow something and it breaks I will try to make it right. But I prefer to not borrow things. I would rather buy it and if it breaks then its a bummer but at least its paid for and I don't have to go out and buy something right that second to replace it. I think the rental is a good idea. Too bad I don't know anyone around me with an idi motor then I could just split the cost and check both motors.

i got it!
man.i had to fight for her though god dangit lol.

now i can keep my diesel in proper tune for max performance and fuel economy.
should pay for itself over the years.

You'll love that MT1480, they are neat tools. Totally worthless if the magnetic probe goes bad or the luminosity probe gets lost/broken. Other than that, the next most important thing is just to keep the wiring away from the moving parts and know the correct offset for alternate cylinders in case #1 is inaccessible. I have a factory manual I'd be glad to copy for anyone who has a meter.
