I used to routinely remove the fan from my truck every fall and put it back on in late spring. It seemed improve performance a little in the warmup period at the start of each drive. Never tried in the summer since the AC works in my truck. I unplug the AC compressor in the winter if the fan is off, but it can reduce defogging efficiency under some conditions.
