Running around in 4x4

I was out getting some firewood, had to have the truck in 4x4. I had it in 4x4 low. I'm not sure if it was just that it was in such a low gear or what but it felt like it slipped a bit while in 4x4. Could this be something transfer case related?

Also had another problem. Smelled like hot brakes. Also while at a low rpm I was having difficulty with my brakes, they felt really spongy, but as soon as I got some rpms up a bit they were fine. Didn't happen every time though. Vacuum pump on its way out?

If your 4wd was "slipping" you would hear it. Like someone was beating on your floor hearing it

Yes. there is no slipping. It would be the chain skipping over teeth and I would guess you know what racket that would sound like.

Now, if you not that familiar with 4wd you have felt it "bind" like all 4wds will do in high traction or tight maneuvering situations

If it was slipping, is there any chance it was simply the tires losing traction for a second?

Alternately, given the "hot brakes" smell, what tranny do you have? If you have a manual, is there any chance the clutch slipped?
