Runaway 6.9 Full Pull

Not sure if this has been posted here before, but how in the world can a N/A idi (i assume it is from the dual exhaust) make that much more power from running on its own oil (That is compared to the duramax it pulled against)? I always thought you start to "huff" out the flame when you get around a 12-15:1 fuel air ratio and it makes less power and runs horrible.

Under normal circumstances our rpm and power output are limited by fuel and air. When we dont have enough air we smoke black thus the nickname rolling coal.

His truck was smoking hazy blue meaning he was burning oil from poor compression or some other issue. He was not overfueling the engine so he could have had more power with extra fuel.

Then she ran away. In this state, with enough oil the engine will be able to rev higher and have more fuel than it can handle, the combination was more powerful than the "underfueled" and governed IP provided.

Now if he had a turbo or super to force more air in, there wouldve been even more power as the fuel to air would be closer to balanced.

It does not take much oil to make one rev way up and run away.much less that one would think.

Why did you say it's na because of dual exhaust? My truck has an ats turbo with dual's. They are bolth on the passenger side. One is inside of frame (in the factory position) and one runs down the outside of the frame rail. I took a pic but it's not so clear

Hello to all. I have read here for quite some time, first time typing.
My question is could a guy recreate that by injecting oil down the intake, to have the power of a runaway, and still have it under control.

There are much smarter and safer ways to add more power. Methanol injection is similar to what you are describing but uses much cheaper blue window washer fluid. Cools the intake too helpful for those with turbos.

Propane is another intake injectable.

You could just pour oil down the intake but oil costs more and a real runaway is much harder on the engine, in part due to the excessive rpms.

Fuel always has been one of the major impacts to horsepower with these engines. A stock db2 cannot put enough fuel out on a turbocharged truck. Conestoga and r&d performance have db2s with more output to bring up the power. Just make sure you hve a turbo an pyro, cam and intercooler is also beneficial to the power quest

In all honesty, it would be worth the engine if I could get nine to do that. I love pulling trucks and tractors but my bronco almost always snaps a drive shaft and my idi is more of a joke to pull against all those new trucks.

If mine took off like that I'd be grinning ear to ear the whole time I was putting in one of my spare engines. A $300 engine to out pull cummins, strokes and duramaxes? Heck ya!

I just don't get how it can suck that much oil and make that much more power than the duramaxs in the vid. I would venture those duramaxs were 500+ hp and he put some pretty good distance on them. Granted there is more to pulling than just hp, but when he can barely even get it to pull the sled and then when it runs away it puts alot of distance on the other trucks it makes me wonder what is actually going on in the combustion chamber.

I am pretty sure that truck is NA bc with that kind of rpm at the end and then just straight killing the motor i am sure you would hear a "turbo fart". So i would say it is making all that extra power from running away on a NA motor (which i think is impressive).

I doubt it's making much more power than stock. I bet that thing was close to 6k rpm which means more wheel speed. Wheel speed and traction are the keys to pulling.
Waste oil has about the same energy content as diesel, but you don't have a governor to keep the rpms down when your engine is feeding on its own blood.

Situations like this are why i plan on plumbing a co2 tank in the cab by the drivers seat directly to the intake. It takes very little co2 to stop the engine and does no damage.

I am pretty sure it is making a lot more power... hp=rpm*torque/5252. If the rpms go way up and the torque just doesn't drop like a brick (which I doubt it did bc it keeps pulling the sled) you are physically going to make more hp. I don't think the rpms got quite that high either....I just don't see 6k on an "non built" idi going very well (valve float, inertial forces, etc I would think it would cause a catastrophic failure) and the fact that he came back for another pull seems to make me think the motor wasn't that bad off. (I would say he didn't get over 4500 rpm). Just my .02 though.

Who knows maybe you can have a planned runaway and just kill the motor with CO2 at the end of the run...i don't think the pulling leagues will allow it though.

I also don't believe the rpms are to much over governed speed. It sure dose not sound like it to me. Before I put the turbo on my truck it sounded a lot like that.

Never pour any fuel down the intake. Thats a sure way to create a run away. Whats happening when fuel in poured into the intake the engine rpm takes off. now there is no governor to act on the higher than normal rpm. You have lost control of the engine. When that happens there is no limit to rpm and engines like ours can't live at 6000 rpm. Way too much rotating mass in there and the compression ratio together will kill the engine. When a diesel starts drinking its own oil like kool aid its building rpm and heat really fast. It just can't live very long. To test this your going to need a dyno so you can see the charts telling hp, torque and rpm reached plus the heat. Run it till it breaks so you will know what it takes. A dyno can destroy an engine at will too.
